How To Tell If You're Running Lean?
#11
if you knew what you were doing you could put a voltmeter on the o2 sensor.
.45 volts is stoich ( lower voltage is lean, higher voltage is rich)- corrected- typo left out the "4"
this is how i tune my carbed bikes and cars- even the panhead and the trail 90
mount an o2 sensor, and ride around with a voltmeter on my bars.
noting load and throttle positions as I go.
pocketful of screwdrivers helps too.
pt 2. I used to read plugs- it just doesn't offer any useful data this day and age with modern systems
to properly read a plug you would install new plugs, and run the motor at the rpm and load of interest, then kill the motor and coast to the shoulder and pull the plugs and read them.
install new plugs and repeat at same or new rpm range.
trying to gather info from a plug that has been used at idle, low speed, cruise and WOT is useless as the observer cannot determine under which conditions the plug deposits ( or lack of) occurred.
if you are worried, you can add nightrider.com XIEDS

Heater +
chassis ground
signal +
signal - ( often just grounded on a 3 wire system)
thanks, Mike

As far as I'm concerned, new bikes run too lean from the factory. If I were riding a bone stock bike I would still have put on XIED's or VIED's. Also as far as I'm concerned, XIED's are all you will need through a stage one upgrade. Beyond that, cams/headwork, I'd install a tuner.
