So, I have noticed threads about stripping the Derby cover screws and was thinking that perhaps they are the Torx Plus heads instead of the regular Torx? Not a mechanic, but I do know that you will strip a Torx+ head using a regular Torx bit.

Any thoughts?

 

Standard Torx drivers can be used to drive Torx Plus screws, but not to full torque because of the loose fit.
Torx Plus drivers will not fit standard Torx screws.

The #1 cause of people stripping the head is because they use a T25 instead of the T27 size that it is.

T27 bit does not come in most smaller tool sets.

The T25 that does come in those sets, will fit (but its not a tight fit).
So, when you try to put any pressure on it it will strip the head.

 

I would agree as I had new hex heads as a back up when doing my clutch because of all the stripped torx head posts. I used a t27 bit and had no problems at all, put them back in. I like to use oem visible fasteners, it adds to the sleeper look!

Or you can go to Sears (Craftsman) and buy a single T27. Not cheap, but WAY better than the alternative.
Cheap tool are a bad idea anyway.

 

I had a list of all torx, sae bolt, and allen sizes on a late model Harley.... now of course I can't find it. I think it was bookmarked on my laptop.......... the one that exploded when if fell down the stairs.

 

I changed mine to stainless button head allens.

 

I have a set of SNAP-ON torx bits, and their power screwdriver, I have not stripped a torx since I bought those, Well worth the money to me. I think I gave like $300.00 for all of it...

 

In a previous thread, it was stated that they are a T+, but when I went to try to get a T+ nobody, including the local dealer, had heard of them. After stripping a couple using a T25 (see above) I did get a T27 bit and that, together with antisieze on the bolts, has resulted in a problem free status since.
