The first thing I did was test mine. First off in a straight line grab and hold. In a perfect world you should never do it but it isn't a perfect world and when that cager pulls out in front of you and you don't have room to go left or right ... The ABS was quite impressive in its performance. I also tested in in a moderate corner and while this required a bit more trust, I am confident now it won't lock on me and wash out.

I can't say it is perfect but I'm not sure I would ride a bike without now that I have it.

Admittedly I dont ride that aggressive style but for "everyday riding" and touring, I will keep mine.

I have not been impressed yet with Harley's ABS.

Also, I think there have been improvements in the ABS system since 2008. In fact I think there was a system update from the dealer (flash) that was recommended in a service bulletin I think - I could be wrong tho

Agreed, its a double edged sword. I've had more than my share of WTF moments when I would have been better off and less surprised without ABS. But then again I haven't lost control because of it yet and figure that one day when my reaction time and riding expertise isn't enough and the ABS kicks in and allows me to steer clear without sliding into a certain death situation, maybe I'll be back to tell you about it.
ABS shines in unexpected situations but for someone like me with just as many aggressive offroad miles as road miles under my belt I know why you feel the way you do.

You are correct and I think it did improve on the ABS not kicking in so easily.

The software upgrade helps, but its still too dangerous to have switched on when riding hard.

There have been 2 updates, 1 for the 2008 and 1 for the 2009. There may be more now but I am aware of these 2 and my bike was updated at 1000 miles. Before the update the rear brake was almost un-useable on irregular roads, it is better now but not as good as some would lead us to believe. I will state as I have in the past that this system will benefit the more casual rider in panic situations. So please take my opinion as I intended it, MY riding style does not mesh at all with this ABS system.
