Dunlop E3 tire size

Dunlop E3 tire size
I just put a set of E3's on my '07 today. I had been debating long and hard as to whether to get the E3's or the Metzelers due to the rear tire size issues. The stock rear tire for my bike is a Dunlop 402 in MU85HB-16, which Dunlop does not have that size in the E3, but Metzeler does in their 880 series. However the Metzelers are not supposed to be any better in tire life than the 402's and those sucked.
Numerous people on this site said they have used E3's on '08 and earlier bikes (with the narrow belt) in size 160/80HB-16 with no issues, except for a few that said they had to notch the belt guard due to rubbing. I did not want to have to do that, but I also don't like changing rear tires every 5000 miles either so I took a chance and got a set of front and rear E3's with the rear being the 160/80HB-16.
Today, after picking up the wheels from the independent shop I use for tire mounting, I put the wheels back on. I was worrying if the rear would work but it turns out it works perfectly with plenty of room between the tire and belt guard and fenders. No issues at all. in fact I don't think that tire is too much wider than the stock tire that I took off, but they sure look a lot better. Hopefully in a few months I will be able to get back on the bike again and see how they handle. They have to be better than those 402's. Those tires are nearly dangerous on tar strips and grooves.

The front is an MT90HB-16, which the E3 is the same size as the 402's were. If your drive belt is the narrower one, then the 160/80 should fit fine on the rear. I really didn't see much difference in width of the new tire from the old one.
