Default Detach bit or Street Glide

G'day Folks

I've been thinking for many months what to do with regards to my ride. Background is the wife has got her own Sportster these days and so doesnt need to ride the back of my bike. Over the past few years I've gone from an 05 Road King, then 07 Ultra Classic, then to the current 10' FLHTK.

Originally I'd thought I don't need such a heavy bike no more and would go something like a Fat Bob for riding ability. Anyway I didn't rush out, I tried a Fat Bob and liked it but wasn't sure it would be too radically different. So I'm now thinking, well ok for some, that I should either do the detach tourpack thing or go the whole hog and get a new Street Glide.

The cost wouldn't be much different between the options and I like the idea of a black SG kept fairly plain albeit slightly blacked.

Thoughts?

Go the detach route. You might find you want a tour pak for trips, etc. It is cheaper to do the detach route and turn it into a street glide than it is to buy a street glide and add all the ultra features.

Detach.

2009 FLHTC, SG seat, SG rear shocks

Tourpak, Ultra seat and 13" shocks go on for touring.

Do the detach and change the seat. It will look like a whole new bike.
But it sounds like you just want a new bike (black & blacked out).

Aye, I do sort of want a black bike lol. TBH I've already thought about the option of luggage if going away - I'd put a solo seat on with the flat rack and a Givi box which sits on my TDM. Once at destination just detach the rack and much lighter than and cheaper than the tourpack option but same size.

I think for general riding the SG will suit this country better than the heavier Ultra - if we had wide roads it wouldn't be such an issue

A bike like yours looks great with the tour pak removed.

Detach here to , After you take everything off it won't be any heavier than a street Glide. You will still have your passing lights on a SG you won't , you won't have cruise control you won't have a CB , My vote is keep the Ultra

very minor weight difference- what, 35 pounds ?

width, the same either way.

SG, short shocks= harsher ride- city riding, speed control, kerbs, potholes etc.

givi box on a harley- ? ugh.

you just want to go shopping, don't you...

What issue? The weight difference is negligble w/ the tour pak removed. I think your FLHTK w/ a solo seat and solo detachable tour pak rack would be a killer combination--better paint than the vivid black SG IMO. If you want, black out the FLHTK.

Your $$$$, so do what you want.

If I had it to do over again, I would probably go the Ultra route and do the detach thing. What I would give for some lowers and a CB......

Also, your bike would be more unique than another blacked out SG on the road.
