Talking Racetech Springs with modified Ricors

To all

Just add my $.02. The fabrik8r mod works!! I just finished upgrading my 2002 Fatboy. Prior to the swap out, the front end was mushy and I got the "thunk" sound on bad bumps. For the most part the bike hopped over bumps in the road.

Teardown was straight forward, but on one side the oil was a gray and mixed with water. The other side was black and thick. One side was bound up and was a real b**** just to get it off the tree.

Install was straight forward following the Racetrech/ Ricor instructions.

I upgraded to Racetech spring (.95kg), Ricor shocks with Fabric8r mod and a 4.5 spacer to give of .24 preload.

Now the ride is firm, solid in the turns, no "thunk" - like a brand new ride. Thanks to Fabric8r for all his help.

Looking for clear skies tomorrow to give it a longer run out.

Keep the shiny side up!!

I am finally satisfied with the Ricor Intiminators (modified by Fabrik8r) install on my 2011 FLTRU and thought I should post my results. I ran Progressive Monotubes for 6 months and was never satisfied with the pogo stick ride they produced. I am still running Ohlins 3-3 shocks on the rear and very satisfied with their performance. I primarily ride curvy secondary roads in central NC, Blue Ridge Mountains and enjoy a spirited ride. This post is to help others save time trying find a starting point for sag etc.

my weight - 175lbs.
springs - Race Tech .95kg. as recommended by them
lowered 1" by using 2 1" bottom out springs on each side
spacer - 3 1/4"
produced 1 3/4" sag = 45mm

I used Amsoil 5wt. and felt the front end had the jitters, especially on small washboard imperfections on asphalt. Now is when it got weird. I then went overboard (impatient) and changed the fork oil to 15wt. This was not tolerable on expansion joints riding concrete interstates, just unresponsive. That means 10wt. had to be the answer, but remembering Fabrik8r said the Intiminators were developed for Amsoil 5wt. Next I installed 10wt and it was close to the right ride quality I've been searching for. So by this time I was getting very fast changing oil and decided to mix a cocktail of 50% 5wt. and 50% 10wt. Amsoil. I realize this is not correct for the Intiminators but I absolutly love the ride and handling of the Amsoil 7.5wt. mix.

Interesting set up, I'm glad you got it working to your satisfaction. If you simply added an extra spring on the bottom and didn't add a longer damper tube, I'm pretty sure that's what contributed to the "jitters". That bottom spring is a rebound spring, if you doubled up, you added twice the normal rebound, and if you didn't add longer damper tubes and still used 3 3/4" spacers, you basically have a normal set up with double rebound springs. I don't understand how you achieved a lowering effect using this method. It isn't a perfect science and sometimes you have to do some tweaking to get it the way you want it, especially if you're doing your own mods along the way. If this set up and the alternate fluid works for you then it's not wrong. I'd like to hear you assessment after you ride it for a while. I wasn't aware there was a significant weight difference on the RG front end. Thanks for sharing the variation, I always get questions about lowering, but I never have the answers, I just don't have any experience with it. I'm sorry it wasn't a simple drop in and go, but I didn't develop this "tune" with a lowered set up, hopefully your experiments will help someone else.

2010 ultra
Just got my intiminators in this morning
Race tech .95kg springs
4 inch tube amsoil 5 wt shock therapy
gave me 1 1/2 sag 1 inch lower than stock which i wanted
my weight 165

First I tried progressive drop in 1 inch lower with harley oil then changed to belray
couple different weights, never could find what I wanted.

So first ride well let put it its frigging AMAZING
I rode my normal ride to work with several different road conditions, im not going to go into detail about every bump but like most of the reports about this mod it is great!!

I lowered the bike using the additional 1" lowering springs that come with the Progressive Drop In Lowering kit, then shortened my spacer to achieve correct preload. If this second top out spring is an incorrect method to lower the ride height I would like to hear other opinions.

I have the racetech 1.0 springs for my 205ish pounds, and had the Ricor intimidators modded by fabrik8r.

I 've had them for awhile, and just don't have the time to put them in, so I finally took it to an Indy.

He is installing springs and intimidators, replacing all 4 fairing brackets, changing HK radio out for another HK radio, I've got the intermittent sound cut out issue also, he's also bleeding the brakes, installing the HD LED headlight and fog lights. Why is it work is always slow when you don't have anything going on and when you have things to do work needs you from sun up until sun set?

He called me and said the 5 wt amsoil is to light, and the bike is topping out on rebound or hard throttle input blip. He said there is a loud cluck when it tops out. Never topped out with OEM set up. He recommended putting 20 wt in. I told him the Ricors were speced for 5 wt Amsoil, but do what he had to. I suspect that I'll get it back riding like a brick, but I'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

If I recall correctly you got a standard set up, not lowered, all you have to do is set the fluid level proper and get the sag set proper, I got feedback from a few 1.0 kg users, and a 4" spacer should put you right in the ballpark for sag. If your indy actually has already done the work and put it all back together, seems like you should ride it for an assesment. If it's clunking and functioning poorly, then he did something wrong, its that simple. If he puts 20w in your forks, it will ride like a brick, and you might as well put the OEM valves back in.

I agree with fab. I also have the 1.0KG springs. I weigh 186 but I wanted a little stiffer spring so I installed the 1.0KG. My spacer is 3 5/8. I also used the correct 5W Amsoil. Love the ride and it's just the perfect amount of ride stiffness for me. if your getting a clunk or bad rebounding something was not installed correctly or younhave too little oil.

Sail

Can you tell me what your sag ( with bike upright and you sitting on it)
is with the 3 5/8" spacers?

Going to try to get off early enough to go by the shop before they close today.
