I have read various things on this subject on HDF over the years, even running a 150/80 with a wide belt. I have one on my early Evo now, using a narrow belt, with my stock narrow fender and the tyre is dead centre in it, so I am one of the fortunate ones.

OP is at the other end of misfortune, with things working against getting getting a 140 in. I used an Avon Venom 140/90, which measured 139mm wide, with my narrow belt and had to trim the belt guard, but that was all.

I now have a later spec wide fender and Deuce 4.25x17 wheel to try!

Course he could be completely wrong.
Mine was a no-go before and after alignment. I considered getting a left side spacer made and having the caliper milled to move the wheel to the right a little but decided it really isn't worth the cost and hassle.

I ran the MU85 on an 02 ultra for 65K, tried the E3 for about 7K but the belt rubbed with the E3, changed back to the MU85,I had to remove the belt gaurd.
You can try and push the rear fender over a bit.

I'm at the same conclusion. Although I'd love to run the 140mm rear to get it to work seems like it'd be too much trouble and money. I'm gonna mount an OEM 130mm tire and try to sell the 140 and get a bit of my money back. Maybe in a year or two when I do after market wheels I'll try to have a thicker tire installed.

Bought the pingle sprocket spacer, mounted it and the MU85 tire and slammed it on, Worked so well 10,000 miles later it's time for another
Very happy
