Default Pinging?

I'm noticing an annoying little ping lately. Seems to be most noticable on the freeways. I'm usually in 6th gear between 70 and 75 when I hear it. I use premium gas as the user manual says. Anyone else have this problem or suggestions? Thanks.

I put mine in 6th between 65 and 70 and have no pinging.

To the OP. Do you use gas from the same brand and station? If so, try a different brand. If possible, find some that doesn't have any Ethanol in it. See if that helps.

I had a similar issue. Richening the AFR helped some but I had to remove some timing to completely eliminate the ping. Do you have a tuner on the bike that will allow you to adjust the timing?

Really? So he should change his riding style due to a bike malfunction.

My 08 dyna doesn't ping. Does this happen all the time or is it intermittent. I have been trying out various things to either aid in fuel consumption or get more power. If you need more octane try 2 ounces of acetone per full tank of fuel. That should eliminate the ping. Before I get flamed by guys who have no idea acetone breaks down the hydrocarbon molecule making the chain shorter, thereby allowing a more complete burn. And it's 120 octane. And 2 ounces per 5-6 gallons is NOT enough to eat a fuel line or cause any problems.
I learned the acetone trick at the track. It allowed for more timing and bigger shots of nitrous. And as a bonus you will get 5% or so better fuel economy

My tuner for stage 1 did this on my 96 with the PCV. Started when it came back from the dyno, believe it or not. Twice on the dyno, ran like crap after both tuning sessions. Had to adjust the fuel via my computer and use seat-o-the-pants testing to ween it out. About 5 tuning rides to get rid of it.

2012 Your theory doesn't apply. Shift into 6th at 55 according to the manual.

Good answer

Better answer...... 2012 bike not totally broken in yet. Or a bad stage 1 download..... or stage 1 hardware and no download. More info would help.

Thanks for all the answers. In regards to the download, my local HD dealer did the stage 1 and a typical download for the common stage 1 parts i picked... V&H slip ons and air intake (kept the "football" air cleaner cover). I plan on telling the dealer about it when I bring it in for the 5K next month. I have 2700 now. Went with synthetic fluids at 1K. Stage 1 was done at about 500 miles.

see if it is repeatable.

My 09 pinged at 2800~3200 rpm on 6% grades. brand of gas, ambient temperature didn't really affect it. but it always pinged on 6% grades in that rpm range.

Of course if it did ping, I'd downshift to pull up the hill.

This was with the bike dead stock at 5000 miles.

I used nightrider.com XIEDS and that solved the ping problem forever.- this may be an option to consider ( my ecm is stock- no download, no flash)

from there I went to my hi flow muffler of choice and hi flow air cleaner- still no problems with pinging, good stage 1 power, mpg at about 43 mpg

6th gear? on my 96" at 65 MPH on flat ground.

Yes, I know the manual may say 55 but that puts the revs where you cannot quickly accelerate out of a situation.

This is my 6th Harley, what do I know.

Mike

Your dealer probably did an EPA friendly download, and it's still a little lean. If you have access to 93 octane try that. and stay away from bargain gas.
