2012 cvo RG verses 2009 cvo RG
I have a deposit on a new 2012 white/black CVO Road Glide that is coming in next month. I currently ride a 2009 CVO Road Glide. I can't decide if it is worth stepping up as there doesn't seem to be much difference in them. In my area they are hard to come by and I don't want to give up the 2012 and then wish I had kept it. Problem is the dealer is not willing to step up to what I think is a fair trade-in on the 2009 It has 16,000 miles, Fullsac pipes, SE tuner, SE breather, dyno tuned and new tires, and what I what consider new condition, it is orange/black what is it worth on the open market? Is the used market good for the 2009? What can I expect to sell it for?

CVO is a cosmetic package which I think depreciates at a higher rate than a 'normal' bike.
they have alot of expensive addons which appeal to a smaller segment of the market.
you can go to kbb.com and search the used market for "comps" on your bike to help determine a value.
but if you have an emotional attachment to the 2012 the dealer has you.
so it's completely up to you to determine the value of the new bike vs old bike.
and you could always do a private party sale on the 2009 if you want- although I think most people interested in a CVO will also want new, not used.
I myself have passed on cvo/ screaming eagle bikes, 'cause i didn't like the "attention grabbing graphics"
Good luck, Mike

I don't have a clue what it would be worth but in my opinion, the orange and black is the most badass look.
From an 09 to a 12 isn't going to be a whole lot different and if you've spent money getting your 09 to where you're happy and comfortable on it you may have to start over. Hell, when I went from my 02 electra glide to the 10 road glide I didn't really see a whole lot of difference.
If money is no object then buy it.....then again, if money wasn't an object you may not care about the trade in value

the 09 CVO is a great bike, the 12 is better. I just got a 12 over xmas. it is vasly improved over the 09. The ride is better, the handling much better. The only problem with the 12 is that big *** heavy breather that makes your leg stick out three feet. my 12 is the skunk model just as you have ordered. Stick with the 12 and if you have to sell the 09. Check out ebay or cycle trader to see what they are selling for, that will give you an idea what it is worth.

These bikes retailed for around $30k when new. My local dealer sold their last one for $27k and if you would take a look on ebay they're still selling, used, for near $27k. Not bad for a 3 model year old bike.

I think the depreciation on any bike, like just about anything, is higher in the first few years than later in its life. However, values of the CVO bikes are a bit more difficult to predict, because there are much fewer of them and the demand for them varies in different regions of the country. Dealers will buy & shuttle bikes amongst themselves to satisfy that demand. In other words, your bike might be worth significantly more in another region, but your dealer will always try to lowball you. I'd also say that because there are fewer used CVOs on the market than regular bikes, it makes predicting prices tougher for dealers. As a result, they will go more conservative because they (in their eyes) are taking a bigger risk.
On the plus side, a CVO isn't just a bike with "expensive addons", but a unique bike with a serial number that equals a higher value (& loan value). There is NOTHING that depreciates faster than a regular bike that the owner has put $10K+ in extra chrome & goodies, even if they are HD accessories. That's just wasted money at trade-in time. And lets be honest, how many buyers of regular production bikes leave them stock? With a CVO, you've let the factory do that & its a better value at both purchase time and selling time. IMHO, a CVO bike is better money spent than the regular bike.
And it's more than cosmetic. The CVO has always had the larger engines before the regular bikes, plus the SE exhaust & breathers. It's more than just looks.
BUT back to the OP's question. Sell your bike outright if possible. The 2012's aren't made of unobtanium, and if it takes a year to find the right buyer for your bike, you can go put a deposit down on a '13.
Of course, if you believe the Mayans, you better just get the '12!
