Default Erratic gas gage

I realize my bike is put up in storage for the winter but now is just as good a time to ask this question as wait until spring.

When my gas tank gets under plum full the gas gage starts bouncing very erratically. It jumps from full to empty and back constantly as I run down the road. This drives me nuts so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas what I can do to fix this very annoying problem? [:@]

Thanks

Thats a possibility. I'm thinking I'll have to pull the tank cover off this spring and then pull the gas gage/float out and replace it. I don't mind spending money on my bike if its chrome but I hate to spend money on something that I can't see shine. [&:]
