Dont let it on too long without the engine on or battery can be drained beyond starting it.

According to my Gerbings instruction, you should start the bike before you plug it in if the control is preset to a certain level, or plug in with the control off, this way, full current will go to the starter.

I don't suspect HD would be any different.

Thanks guys. My dealer told me they put a fused wire on the acc switch for heated gear et al. Just thought I would use it. I'll try it with the bike running and see if it heat up better. If not I'll wire it to the battery. Hopefully the jacket isn't a dud.
