Your cold riding record

RE: Your cold riding record
Last winter I picked up my 98 FB. It was Feb. 27. I rode about 80 miles home. Fleece Jacket, knit hat, glasses, uninsulated work gloves, jeans and boots. Talk about a dumb idea. The highest it got was 28 degrees. Sure felt warmer when I left. I was froze to a pulp but after several coffee stops I made it in about 4 hours.

I am overseas now, but for two years rode a 30 miles commute from Snowflake, Arizona. Many mornings at 6:00 am the tempture at the bank showed 12-14 degrees. No electric riding gear... but all the clothes I could get on and still get around. Yea, the knees seemed to come off the worst.

Used to ride my Sporty chop from Gwinett St. in N. Charleston to Detyen's Shipyard over on the Wando River, 'bout 30 miles or so. This was in 1980. Rode all winter long, except in the rain. Got down into the 20s plenty of times. I didn't have chaps back then, but surely wished I'd had 'em!
And the comments about the knees faring the worst is true. Mine kill me in cold weather now.

I don't know for sure what the temp was on Tuesday, but by the time I got to work (25 miles), it was up to 32*. The coldest temp that I know for sure, it was 28 when I arrived at work. I normally wear a short sleeve shirt, my jacket, boots chaps and gloves. When I rode last year, it was with a half helmet and a bandana covering my face. I now have a modular helmet and it makes it a little more bearable. I rode today without chaps when I went to lunch and the cold front had just moved in. That was about the coldest I've been.

The '05 Frost yer Nuts run. Temp started at 32 but went up to 51.
I have ridden in January when the temp was 22 and sunny with no snow on the road - I did wear extra clothes. Today
I saw a funeral escort riding in single digit temps, our windchill was well below 0.

Rode in the low 30's several times but, was layered, t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt, sweat shirt, leather coat, skully hat, neoprene face mask, googles, leather cold weather gloves, long johns, jeans, chaps, standard riding boots..
I have no reason to ride in single layered clothing, in low temps, it is painful and just odd? How many miles are needed to actually get through it?
