Default Oil Temps

Talking to a guy yesterday about my 97" build i'm having done and he asked how hot my oil ran. Told him, 2-up loaded, highway speeds, temp ran around 210 to 230 depending on traffic. Told me i had better get an oil cooler or my build would not last. I thought as long as temps didn't run over 260 i'd be okay. Been using Amsoil 20-50 in cooler weather and Amsoil 60 weight in summer. Said i needed to keep temps around 180 to 200. Anyone have any problems with the Nikasil lined jugs and oil temps causing problems?

Your engine isn't going to fail without an oil cooler, but there is nothing wrong with keeping your oil temps down. Show me a Twin Cam running normal 180 and I'll show you a bad gauge.

Seriously 180 degrees....even in the winter its doubtful....air cooled engines run hot regardless.

Water boils at that temperature, it will still evaporate off at lower temps. I do agree that getting it warmer than that helps. Nothing wrong with a bike running at 220 loaded.

Your oil temps aren't that high. An oil cooler on an air cooled motor is always a good idea however your bike won't blow up without one.

He wasn't an oil cooler salesman by any chance? Or maybe he read it on the internet.
