Question 1990 tour pak fitment for 2010

Did a search about tourpak fitment from 1994 ultra classic to 2010 FLHR. I was not able to find to much info on the subject. Here is my question. I am looking at tour paks on Ebay and found a few interesting ones to choose from. One is a 1994 ultra classic , another a 1999 roadking and another a 2003 roadking. I have already purchased and installed the 4 point docking hardware and 2 up tour pak bracket for the tour pak to install to. Will any tour pak from say mid 1990 to present fit a modern tour pak bracket without too much trouble or not or do I have to order new. All information and opions appreciated.

I think for a perfect fit you'll want a 2006+ tourpak.

with an earlier tourpak you will have to do some hole drilling and perhaps a spacer or plate between the tour pak and the mounting rack. Not insurmountable.

DAWG posted a write up on moving the tour pak to a 3rd optional position, from the std 2. if has some good photos of the underside of the tour pak so you can see how they are contoured on the bottom.

The ultra tourpak has those extra brake/running lights in the tour pak- these take up a fair amount of internal space-- I prefer the EG Classic tourpak with out those lights.

the roadking tour paks you are looking at on ebay were added by the owner- RK's don't have tour paks.

there are also tour pak knock offs sold on ebay- maybe you can gather some info from other riders on the quality of those.

Any tour pak 2008 model year or older will need holes to be drilled to match the holes in the '09 and newer detachable racks--not difficult to do and many, myself included, have done it.

Also, '05 and older tour paks are heavily ribbed on the bottom and won't sit "flat" on the '09 and newer racks. '06 and newer tour paks have an essentially flat bottom which will look better than the heavily ribbed bottom of the '05 and older tour paks.

Also, '96 and older tour paks use a different hole mounting pattern for the backrest, so if you want to use a '97 or newer backrest and don't modify the mounting holes, the backrest will be mounted too high relative to the lid--it'll still work, but it will look odd IMO. Again, you can drill new holes in the older lid to cure the problem.

Recommendation: stick to '06 and newer tour paks rather than the older, heavily ribbed/molded bottoms.

I took the Tour Pak off of my 1985 Electra Glide I had in the attic of my garage and put in on the Detachable rack for my 2009 Road Glide.
What I had to do was use spacers to make it fit. The earlier Tour Pak had two ribs to center it on the luggage rack. The newer models are flat. The holes lined up without drilling new ones. But the Tour Pak seems closer to the seat. I may need one of those relocation brackets to move it back.

And on the Back Rest, the bolt pattern is the same on the top of the Tour Pak. I found the difference is the lower pouch is mounted to the bottom of the Tour Pak. On the earlier models, it is attached to the back Rest.

This Tour Pak is on my 2009 Road Glide.
It is off of my 1985 Electra Glide.

Here is the same one on my 1998 Ultra.

Thanks to all that replied. I was not aware of the ribbed bottoms on the earlier tour paks and how they might fit and look. Good point on the light and lenses taking up room. Will keep my eyes open for a 2006 or up. Used prices are getting close to purchasing a new one especially if you need to repaint. Again thanks for the info.

One thing about used TP's; they often come with additonal accessories that may be useful to you, e.g. tour pak racks, side marker lights (which were not OEM except on Ultras on '06 and newer models), etc. which makes the cost of repaint a bit more tolerable.
