In the fall of 04 I had the 6 gear set installed in my 5 case. best improvement I did to the bike other than the 103 Jims Stroker. I haven't had any problems and the Hiway cruising is great. I would say, if you don't do hiway cruising and run long distances, don't spend the money. 6th gear is OD and does not good below 70 mph.

BEST OPTION THAT I HAVE PUT ON MY BIKE WAS THE SE SIX SPEED GEAR SET. HAVE ONE IN A 103 STROKER MOTOR AND ONE IN A JIMS 120 AND ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS WITH THOUSANDS OF MILES. GAVE THE OTHER GEAR SETS AWAY TO A FRIEND WHO HAS A SMALL HARLEY SHOP.

I added the HD 6 speed gear set to my 5 speed case , I love it. I'm not sure what the RPM change would have been I added the 3.37 gear reduction at the same time so at 80mph I'm running right around 3000rpm, that's about the same as 5 speed with 3.17 gears was before the change.

I have the SE 6 speed gear set in my Springer Classic with a 95" SE big bore kit. Best money I ever spent on the bike. I did the 6 speed at 1000 miles and the big bore kit at 5000 miles. I had no complaints about the 6 speed with the 88" motor. The 95" just makes the 6 speed that much better. My 6th gear whines a little, not enough to be annoying but just enough to let you know when you are in high gear. I gave a lot of thought to trading up for an '07 and I am glad I didn't.
As far as value of the 5 speed after you take it out? I couldn't tell you, mine is sitting in a box in my garage

I had the SE 95 ci / SE 203 cams / SE 6-speed included in the cost of my 06 so it is covered under the HD warranty.
Like others have said, not really relevant in town but nice on the open road.
Depending on how you do the change, you may get anywhere from $400 to $1000 for either your old gears or complete trans. More if you have fewer miles on them.
YMMV.
And you couldn't give me an 07. But that's JMHO.

Thanks for all the input.....unfortunately, I need to allocate my money in a number of different areas this winter so the tranny upgrade from 5 to 6 would be the only thing I can do as far as the further engine work that some of you fellas have specified. I wonder if I just change out the tranny if it would be worth the money and time, or should I only do the tranny switch if it is accompanied with some sort of engine upgrade?
Thoughts?..........

If I were going to change to 6 speed, I'de have to add something else to get some gain from the cost. One of the cheapest additions to a 6 speed would be a 3.37 gear change, it can be done for less than $500 and will really make a diff how the bike pulls through the gears
