Ive done this change on RoadKings,SoftTails, Dynas , and TriGlides. The TG is the only one that does not need a shorter belt. The pipe wrench and cheater is the best and easiest way to get the nut off, also makes it easier to retorque when you put it back together. That nut is torqued tight and has hi-strength red loc-tite on it.
One thing you need is the locking tool to lock the pulley to the frame otherwise all that pressure you are using to get the nut of is transmitted thru the drive train(especially if you use a 3/4' impact, just think of the pounding tour tranny gears are getting) I havent heard of annyone that could get it off by holding the brake. The following ways are not good ones IMO but you can cut it off, heat it off, beat it off such as with a cold chisel or 3/4" impact (1/2"wont do it, unless the nut wasnt torqued and locked properly) or try the longer 1/2" breaker and just twist the end off it (First change i did i tried a snap on and a chraftsman breaker and twisted both of them.)
These are my opinions take em or not.
The speedo will be off about 5mph and rpm less than 300 at 70mph.
TTS and TMax are the only two tuners that will correct the speedo AND give you your 6th gear light back.

How long of a cheater/pipe wrench combo will I need?
Thanks

18" to 24" pipe wrench will do it with around a 4' cheater. Steady pressure on the cheeter should do it, no need to bounce up and down just increase the cheeter length

How does changing the tranny pulley knock out the 6th gear light? I changed the rear pulley on my 07 and the 6th gear light still works

Just removed the stock 32T pulley on my 2007 Softail Custom. Pipe wrench & 4' cheater did the trick.

Almost embarrassed to ask, but how do I get the old belt off, and more importantly, how do I get the new, shorter, belt on?

Looks like I have to take the swing arm apart????

Thanks

Sorry, that needs to be clarified. I was only refering to if you recalibrate the speedo after the 32t to 30t pulley change.
After around a 2-3mph (and you need 5mph here) speedo calibration the light will not work unless its calibrations are changed also, TTS and TMax are the only 2 tuners that give you acess to both calibrations.

After around a 2-3 3mph (and you need 5mph here) speedo calibration the light will not work unless its calibrations are changed also, TTS and TMax are the only 2 tuners that give you acess to both calibrations.[/quote]

I got it, after the pulley change, if I correct the speedo the 6th gear light will no longer function until until the ECM is re-calibrated. If I leave the speedo alone the light will work.

You got the idea, in your case changing out the rear pulley you are less than half the correction needed for the for the front pulley change so may be ok with just speedo cal.

Default Belt - Swing Arm

That's what I had to do, pull the swing arm 'bolt' out on the right side just enough to slide (or work) the belt past the swing arm on the left side.
Good luck.

I'm going with the 3/4" impact wrench. Buddy has a tractor dealership and has lots of big tools. I'm using the 31 tooth. Already changed the rear to a 68 tooth and used the original belt, it moved the wheel up about 1/4 to 3/8". With the 31 tooth front, the rear wheel will slide back to its original position so no need for a new belt. I'm building a garage so it doesn't look like I will get to this upgrade anytime soon, probably next winter. Also need to check and see if my RevPerf tuner can be programed to fix the speedo difference and make the cruise work correctly. Now if I can only decide on what exhaust system I want...................
