Default Saddle bag pin failure

Has anyone heard of this. The other day 4 of us were stopped at a light . After making a right turn my freinds right saddlebag came off and skidded down the road. He rides a 2009 S/E. All the paint on his bag was scratched up So he goes to the dealer and the service Mgr tells him that you should replace the pins every 2-3 years. Has anyone heard of this?

I havent heard of it but not surprised. In the spring, I'm going with a Brukus kit because I dont trust those pins to hold up, or for that matter to not be an easy target.

Never heard of having to replace the pins every 2 to 3 years, but you do have to make sure they are secure. I bought the Brukus system, some may argue that you can do it yourself a bit cheaper, but I like the system and would recommend it to anybody, including your friend, I never worry about my bags falling off or suddenly missing.

1 inch stainless allen bolts(in my case) and tinner-man or U nuts.
About $7-8 bux @your local hardware store.
Pretty much theft proof too.

What did the pin look like? It would have still been inside of the bag so it would have been easy to see if the pin broke or he failed to twist it into place correctly. These pins are up to the task as the same pins hold on bodywork on Top Fuel Dragsters at 300mph.

I check my pins every time I remove the bags to make sure they are the way they are supposed to be. Some times I may need to pinch them in or tap the latch end with a hammer to keep them from failing.

on the back brackets i use 5/16"x1 1/4" stainless steel bolt, fender washer and stainless steel lock nut. only takes 30 sec to remove when you take off saddlebag. about $3.00 at your local hardware store
