Default 700 mile report on new flash on 2007 Ultra

I thought I'd post this for the people in the cold country that
won't get to many more miles on their 07's this year to try
out the new up dated flash. Recall/Service Bulletin Flash
or what ever you choose to call it!

I had mine done Thursday, so you all understand whats been
done to mine since new 3 months and about 13,000 miles ago
I'll list it for you.

I've never owned a Harley before, this Ultra was given to me
from my wife for my birthday in Sept. I've been riding 40+ years
motorcycles from Japan and Italy only for the whole time, I've
worked on motorcycles about just as long as well, I've road raced
and drag raced motorcycles for a living for a few years just so
you know where I'm coming from.

I never thought this Ultra pulled like a V-Twin should pull out
of a corner in the mountains, it has/had no bottom end pull
like V-Twins I've rode in the past. I had to keep the revs up
to get it to have any pull at all, I never liked this about this
bike. My Ultra rode like an inline 4 cylinder motorcycle not
a V-Twin, high revs were the only way to make it pull out
of a corner or from a standing start.

At 800 miles my 2007 Ultra started surging real bad, I took it
back to the dealer Carolina HD 704-867-2855 Eric installed the
Parade Flash which is a Temp Flash with a Surge Flash layed
over it. This stopped the surging and the Ultra is stock at this
point. The heat problem never changed at this point at all. The
Ultra still would not pull of the bottom end at this point.

At about 10,000 miles I put on (SE Slip On Touring Mufflers)
with no re flash, at this point the Ultra had alot more power
I mean a BUNCH more power! But it still had no bottom end
pull out of corners or from a standing start, it was only slightly
better on bottom but TONS MORE mid and high end power.

I took it in and had the up date flash done and LOOK OUT" now
it has bottom end like a V-Twin should. The problem at this point
is now the power is less then before the flash change, but it is
now the same frome idle to red line. The Ultra now pulls like a
freight train out of corners and from a standing start. This is
much better now but I miss the power I got use to with the SE
mufflers" (you just can't have everything LOL")

This flash change has not helped the heat problem or the pinging
and detonation problem, but the Ultra is now a much better over
all motorcycle.

I hope Harley gets the pinging and heat problem fixed next because
they have done a great job at making it run like a V-Twin now.

One more thing.

New no map work at all 37 to 39 MPG

first map change 41 to 48 MPG

SE Mufflers 41 to 46 MPG

Update map/SE mufflers 43 to 44 steady at any speed
even 90 MPH on the Interstate.

Since the map change it has been much cooler out so that
could be part of the MPG change, I'll have to see come spring
time.

I hope this info. helps out some of you out there struggling
with their 07 Harleys.

I love my Ultra both before and now, yes it rattles, whines, clanks,
and vibrates, but what the heck it's a V-Twin and it's a Harley
so what do you expect it to do?? ... LOL"

Install an air kit with a tuned PCIII, then you'll know how it should run!

Thank you for a simply stated but nicely done technical review/comment on the new download with and without the mufflers.

Three weeks ago I had the lastest download done and I did find it felt smoother and had better lower mid-range. Its too cold here to see if the pinging issue was addressed. I had a set of old Kerker mufflers in a box, decided to slip them on just to see ... it definately made the the motor feel like it woke up.... or maybe because it was louder, it just sounded more powerful. I didnt change the stock aircleaner or anything else, just mufflers.....

Several companies have announced that they now have/or will have, a complete closed loop system with new O2 sensors and self tuning controllers. Since many of the after-market parts for the 07's are not yet released, Im waiting until Spring 07 to make any additional mods. I will be doing the 103 kit w/ cams & such........ I dont know which FI controller I will use until then.

Im taking the wait , read, research & see approach for my 07 SG mods........

Yes sir I understand that no problem because one of my two jobs
is building race engines, in fact I was part of the team that built
the first top fuel motorcycle to run 6.99 seconds at over 200MPH
in the 1/4 mile. Terminal Van Lines Sponsored it Bo O'brocta
rode it. I have no problem understanding what this engine needs
to solve the heat and detonation problems (more fuel) but I would
like Harley Davidson to come up with an EPA legal way of solving
it if posible, if they can't by spring I will take the problem into my
own hands EPA legal or not.

Harley has done right by me up to this point, which is more then I
could say for most of the other brands of motorcycles out there.
IMO Harley has gone way out of their way to give the buying public
what they want (an air cooled V-Twin engine) I just hope they can
make it live air cooled with the EPA nipping at their heels..

Thank you again for your suggestion my friend..

Reno;

Thank you for the kind words.

I was not going to go there, but since you brought it up,
it does idle smoother after the new flash if you can call
a V-Twin idle smooth that is! LOL"

Thanks again for the kind words my friend...

Like BH said, You may like it better now, but its obviously running leaner as your mileage went up, bet it will be hotter than before come summer. The only way it will ever perform like it should and reduce heat by 50-60 degres is to add a fuel mangement system and richen up the fuel delivery. A PCIIII, fuel pack sert or other combined with a free breathing air cleaner. Untill you do this, you can will never realize its potential. On a scale of 1-10 performance your at about a 6 with after adding the required parts and being tuned a 10.

Gunner;

if you look my first post over again you will see the mileage went up with
the (Parade map) and no mufflers. it went down after the mufflers and
then with the new map it droped again.

I never gained mileage with anything except the Parade Map with stock
mufflers. This does not mean that it's not lean because it is" but I just
wanted to clear up your understanding of my first post.

Throughout time, you have had to modify your Harley to reach its full potential. Now is no different. I run stock 07 Ultra pipes and air but have added a PCIII tuned to optimize the fuel system. It runs clean, smooth and cool. This is my third HD. I have never yet been able to ride one stock. (or wanted to) That's the fun thing about owning one. If you want to cool it down and further it's performance, go ahead and get a PCIII. You won't be disappointed. Ride Safe. :-)

PS My mileage did drop when the engine got enough fuel to run proper. I'll spend the extra buck or two on fuel to keep it from running lean.

HD Twincam performance will continue to be restricted, due to EPA emissions requirements. MoCo is well aware of how to unleash performance, but doing it within the guidelines they must follow, seems to be an impossibility. As HD customers we are left to fend for ourselves, if we want to obtain optimum performance and ultimately have a more enjoyable, ridable bike...that runs cooler, while retaining excellent fuel economy!
