How hard is it to change the fork sliders?
Looking to chrome the fork legs this winter. ***** Shinny has an exchange for a lot less than HD charges for new ones. Anyone used them before? Quality? and if so how hard is it to remove the sliders? I have take the forks off before but never the sliders off the tubes. Any special tools?

Some good mechanical ability with some basic tools is required. You should plan on changing the seals when you remove the sliders. Make sure you have the bike stable when you get the front wheel up in the air, because you will be yanking on the tubes to get them off. You WILL need a 6mm allen wrench to separate the slider from the tube (it's on tight). Also will need some PVC pipe (split down the middle)to put in new seals(see pic). If you have never replaced seals be careful, you can damage new seals if installed incorrectly. Of course a manual to understand the process. Did I mention you need to know how to remove your ignition without locking the steering up in place, might want to understand that process before hand. Here are some pics when I did my SG.

It's not really all that hard to do. As said in another post, getting the 6mm allen bolt out of the bottom of the leg is probably the hardest part. You may have to resort to a hammer and chisel to get it turning. Have a new one on hand for each fork just in case. Also, replace the fork oil while your doing this job. You will be amazed how filthy that oil is in there. When refilling each leg with oil, think through how to determine the oil level. You can measure it with a long screw driver instead of the Harley oil level tool.
