I have to replace my rocker covers because of flaking chrome. I was wondering if this is an easy job or not. Has anyone done this? Anyone know who might have a extra set for a twin cam 88?
Pulling those of, then you might as well do performance upgrades at the same time. Clearance between the frame and rear rocker box is the biggest issue. Be prepared to cut some allen wrenches. A set of dog bones goes a long way.
If you are doing just the top cover then I'd say go for it. With the lower rocker box you are getting into some real tight spaces, so you need to do some planning. The Screaming Eagle rocker box wrenches make the job much faster.
do the heads while youre in there. especially cuz its winter
If he pulls his heads then he may as well pull the cylinders off and send them in for a big bore kit. At this point nothing is holding his cylinders down except gravity. After all it is winter.
There may not be snow on the ground but I see a HUGE snowball rollin down the hill!!
exactly right.
Pulling the rocker box covers is an easy job. Lift the gas tank up a little bit, and you're right there. To get the lower rocker boxes off, it helps to take the gas tank completely off the bike, to better access some of the fasteners.
Pulling the heads is another step up in complexity. You need to remove the exhaust, which often means pulling the footboards. You need to remove the horn, air cleaner, throttle body and intake manifold. Once the heads are off, you're just a couple of circlips away from pulling the jugs and pistons.

hell once the jugs are off, pull the case and get your crank done. after all it is winter.
