Removing the fairing mirrors

Removing the fairing mirrors
My Ultra has the fairing mirrors mounted to the left of the speakers. Has anyone ever removed these? I despise them, as they give very limited vision especially right behind the bike. When I ride with a group and the rider behind me moves directly behind me, I lose sight of them! Also the mirrors are in front of my hands, and I see my hand in the mirrors which blocks usable view. I am going to install some mirrors on the bars, but the dealership said that removing the fairing mirrors would leave a large ( about an 1 1/2" hole ) hole in the fairing where they are mounted. If anyone has done this, what did they do about the hole?
Also Mac, I really like the looks of your bars. I may look into those for my Ultra. I don't like the feel of the stock bars. They feel a bit narrow and turn inward a bit too much for me. Your bars look like they would solve both problems for me. Did you have to replace the cables for your install?

RE: Removing the fairing mirrors
I have fairing mount mirrors on my 96, and they were the first upgrade my Dad did to his 05. With the factory handle bar mount mirrors on his 05 if they were aimed to see directly behind you would see is your shoulders.
I have no vision or adjustability issues with mine. Keep in mind they are side view mirrors not rear view.
If you do remove them you will be left with a triangle of 3/16' holes with a 1/4" hole in the center. The hole pattern is about the diameter of a quarter not 1 1/2"

RE: Removing the fairing mirrors
I'll probably leave them on, but I noticed the plastic mirror head is cracking at the top near the corner on both mirrors. I filled the cracks with some black silicone to try to hide the cracks a bit and maybe help to keep them from cracking more. It looks like the plastic is stressed a bit and the heat, vibration, sun, etc. may be working on them. If it gets too bad I'll replace them. I still may put a set of long stemmed mirrors on also.
Thanks , and the Harley dealership was the one that said the hole was that big.[8D]

RE: Removing the fairing mirrors
I have them, and can see just as good with them as with the stem mirrors that they replaced. I like the clean look.
If you take them off you will have four holes on each side. These are about 1/4 inch in diameter each and will cover an area almost the size of the base of your mirror where it contacts the fairing. Don't know what it would require to fill the holes, and make the fairing look original.

Bill

RE: Removing the fairing mirrors
I had them put on when I ordered the bike. I find my mirrors to be highly adjustable. IMO I want to see whats coming up on the sides than what is directly behind me. Even if my mirrors allow me to see more of what is behind me I adjust more laterally. I do not like to have a large overlap in the mirrors.
