Check here http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/...isltn/laws.asp just click on the state you want to know about.

For example here's New York State (for the NY LEO who was wrong in saying it's a municipal thing)

Muffler

Muffler required; no straight pipes; no removal of baffles; no modification of exhaust system that increases noise beyond exhaust system originally installed. Ref: NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law, Article 9, Section 381

Maximum Sound Level

Maximum Allowable A-Weighted Sound Levels at Speed: 35 mph or less, 82 dB(A); over 35 mph, 86 dB(A), measured at, or adjusted to, a distance of fifty feet from the center of the lane in which the motorcycle is traveling. Ref: NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law, Article 10, Section 386.

I don't think the AMA has anything to do with semis They have their own set of rules and regs.

Watch this episode of South Park. A sense of humor is required.

The only consistant reports I have heard of is in NH
Don't know where you got that from but we have no issues here. State law allows something over 106 db's. Act like an idiot and you might get noticed.

NO ENGINE BRAKING
I've seen a few in NH.

Been thinking of moving to Las Vegas - Whats the best and worst areas. Last thing I want to worry about is getting my bike ripped off. Of course with the economy crime may be up all over.
