Anyone swap 2003 Ultra Radio to 2010 Stereo?
I am looking to install a newer radio in my 2003 Ultra Classic Anniversary. I am going to upgrade the sound system with speakers, amp, subwoofer. But want the newer stereo.
Two reasons
(1) The later 8 ohm stereo has much better speaker options. I found some nice 6.5 speakers for the later stereo.
(2) The newer stereo controls the I Pod through the thumb controls allowing you to search for songs on the fly VS having to manually go through the I Pod (Not so safe)
So I wonder if the 2010 stereo would plug in and work through the 2003 controls?
Would I need the controls also?
And harness?
Or is there a adapter? I know we have adapters for thumb controls for cars.
And if I need it, can I buy the controls and harness somewhere besides Harley?

...... the parts book & every dealer will tell you that it can't be done .... but ...... i've seen it accomplished in several situations.
....... seems to me that the same # of wires come off the handlebar controls & that an '06 and up connecter to the head unit could be easily spliced together with the existing control wiring to enable the install.

Here's the write-up on installing the Harman Kardon radio, CB module, and Boom Audio Music & Intercom (BAMI) kit (p/n 77108-09) in my '04 EG--although it's a police model by VIN, electrically it was the same as an EG Standard or Classic since I'd changed the interconnect harness to the civilian version):

An EG Ultra will pose different choices because in addition to the Base Audio Connector (BAC), a 23-wire AMP connector, connected to the radio, the '05 and older Ultra has another 23-wire AMP connector known as the Ultra Connector. The BAC has the handlebar control wires; the Ultra connector has the wires for rear speaker and passenger controls, etc.
In '06 model year, the Ultra connector was changed from a 23 wire connector to a 35 wire connector to accommodate the additional wires needed for additonal add-ons, e.g. CB, XM, Ipod, etc.
Consequently, when intalling the HK in an '05 or older Ultra, the 23 wire Ultra connector would be depinned (i.e. wires removed) and replaced with the 35 wire connector and reassembled using wires for rear speakers, passenger controls, etc. inserted in the correct chambers to match with HK pinouts. Since my EG didn't have the OEM wiring for an Ultra connector, I simply used the non-Ultra Overlay harness (NUOH), p/n 70169-06, to provide the 35 wire connector harness with provisions for CB, XM, rear speakers/passenger controls, etc., and used the BAMI kit to supply the rider and passenger headset connectors, and passenger PTT switch. The Ultra already has those connectors and wiring; hence, the suggested depinning of the 23-wire Ultra connector and reaplacement with the current 35 wire version.
The OEM BAC on the '05 and older models is a simple plug and play on the HK--it's wired the same as the '06 and newer models.
Hope this helps.

PS: Paul, hope you and yours have a Happy Thanksgiving holiday.
