Tach info
Can anyone tell me how I can tell if my tach is reading correctly? The reason I ask is that I am usually operating in the 2500 to 3000 range but I continually read on here that guys with upgraded cams are always in the 4-5k range. I recently installed the 255's in my 96" and I'll be dam if I have ever had it up around 4k without shifting and I think at times I get on it pretty good. Any help clearing this up for me would be helpful....Thanks

My 09 , should be pretty close to the same as yours for gearing.
On my bike , 2nd gear 2,000 rpms is 20 mph
3rd gear 2,000 rpms is 30
4th gear 2,000 rpms is 40
5th gear 2,000 rpms is 50
6th gear 2,000 rpms is "around" 60
I think running at 3,000 rpms in 6th gear was around 75-80 mph
My bike has enough power below 3,000 that I don't hardly ever go over it unless I'm really running to catch up to a group or fartin around.
Your bike should pull really nice from 1800-3000 all day , I would keep it there most of the time.
I'm still thinking of going with 255's or S&S 551 easy starts , because that's the rpm range I ride in 95% of the time.
I'm not of the "twist the daylights out of my engine" crowd , it's fast enough below that.
