Question Permissable Wheel Size Combinations?

I checked all the 18", 19", and 21" wheel threads, but didn't see any of them address the diameter combination of rear/front wheels. I bought a used chrome 16" Roulette wheel for the rear of my '09 EG Classic and want to pair it with a chrome front wheel when the tires need replacing.

Is there a rule of thumb for what the proportional diameter between the two wheels should/can be? If one uses a 19" front with the 16" rear are front suspension mods needed to lower the front of the bike? What if I went w/18" front wheel and same 16" rear wheel?

Thanks in advance.

Nope, at least nothing in stone.

Some have issues with the 21/18 combo which is why Jeff at Coastal Moto recommends 21/17. We did 18/17 on my dads bike

On the 2009 and newer baggers the only issues we have run into are 18 x 5.5" wheels with 200mm rear tires. With your 16" rear you can run a 18", 19" or 21" and they all will work well with your rear. The 21" front does raise the front end about 1 1/4" so that is something to consider.

Go to the Avon tyre web site and look at all of the over all specs of the tires you are interested in other than the 21' the tire sizes are fairly close in size just the side wall height changes!!

There is one hard and fast rule you MUST follow: You have to run a bigger wheel on the front than the back so the bike doesn't look retarded.

I don't think that is important on a bagger, where the rear wheel is not so visible! Larger rear wheels are common on sports bikes. While the rear rim may be smaller than the front, with a wider tyre also comes a larger rolling diameter.

A 100/90 x 18 front tyre is the same diameter as a 130/90 x 16 (MT), so to get a front wheel that looks larger we would have to use a 19" rim, which with the same size tyre is about an inch larger. Sizes from Avon's website, as suggested by hockey8787!

Default Wheel Size Combinations

Thanks for all the feedback, especiall Robert from Hogpro. Sidewall height would keep the overall tire+rim diameter pretty close to same as stock.

FYI, our local dealer is checking to see why the mirror chrome 19" Agitator wheel is not listed for fitment on 2009 up FLHT touring bikes while the contract chrome version IS listed.

Also saw on another similar thread about the downside of only one tire choice (at present) for 19".

Thanks again for the help. Ride safe and ride often.
