..I think this is the best approach, a popular model like the Road Glide will be tough to get for less than msrp, but I'll bet the dealer will do a parts-allowance. $1000.00 is probably hard to get, but even $500 would be nice. Heck, it's money you know you're gonna spend anyway, so to me it's as good as a discount on list. Good luck!
Funny, though I like the Road Glide personally, not many do around here. I can go for weeks without even seeing one. Now Street Glides on the other hand...

depends on where you are.
I just bought my RKC in L.A. HD keeps their supply VERY tight - they'll put a handfull of popular models and maybe 1 "special" one on the dealer's floor, but I couldn't fine one in stock. Had to order it from the factory for me...had to wait for it...and they wouldn't budge off MSRP. A couple of dealers wanted OVER MSRP plus $595 "handling and set up".
The dealer I ended up going through was willing to sell at $595 below MSRP to offset the "setup and handling charge", threw in a bunch of gift cards to offset most of the parts and labor cost for lowering the bike 1" front and rear (Progressive monotubes in the front), Badlander seat, 4-point hardware, and sissybar + pad for the wife, and some other odds and ends, and a 15% discount on whatever other parts I want before I pick up the bike. So I still paid about $500 over MSRP, but I got about $2500-worth of parts and labor thrown in.
A lot of times, the dealer won't budge on the price, but they'll be willing to add some value to the purchase.
