You can hardwire it into the power connection on the other side of that 12-volt outlet for a clean install.

I did the same thing, back side of the lighter socket.

I noticed the same thing with mine, until I purchased a USP power cable.
The cable that ships with the Garmin units is a "data" cable, and can experience what you are describing.[/url]
Interesting, I'll give it a try. I have plenty of other USB cables lying around. Thanks for the tip.

Although it seems intimidating to remove the outer fairing, it really is pretty easy to do and once you get it off your options become much greater for hooking up your GPS. I ran the cable for my Garmin along the clutch cable (although to make it easier to get it through the hole I removed the cable, but it can be put through without doing that) then spliced it into the cigarette lighter wires. I just stripped some insulation, verified with a test light the hot wire, then wrapped the wires and electrical taped them. You can also use the shrink tubing, but someday I may need to remove the wires again.

Here is a pic, the rolled up wire is the Garmin GPS cable and you can see the 2 wires spliced to the cig lighter wires down near the bottom of the photo. This is what the fairing looks like inside.

Taking off the outer fairing is a 90 second job. There are already lugs on the headlight wiring. It truly couldn't be any easier.
