Road King is a touring cruiser.

I am 33, and own an Ultra. Its an amazing bike and the old lady will go anywhere on it with me. We can take what we need and have about every comfort we want. Don't knock what you dont know.

That said, its not my only bike, I do also have a rigid frame custom chopper and also a old 84 FL that is outfitted like a Road King. All bikes have their place, and the Road King is an awesome bike, but is it the ultimate touring bike? No. For long trips or when traveling with another the Ultra gets the nod every time.
You old geezer.

4.) Enjoy the benefits of a am fm radio/cd/mp3/weather band

6.) Ever have need for a cb if stranded
7.) Like the ability to store more than your keys in the lockable luggage
8.) Think keeping road debris/bugs from your pretty smile can be a good thing
9.) Believe things like full gauges come in handy
10.) Power ports for additional electrical accessories might be nice
11.) Feel cruise control makes for a more enjoyable ride

And of course

Can pull the tourpak and lower fairings ( with HD quick disconnect kits ),
change to a shorty windshield, and toss on a solo seat in about 5 minutes.

IMO have a much nicer bar hopper/cruiser
1-9:No thanks
10-11: Got it

I have often wondered about those who buy a RK then add fairing with radio and tour pack and lowers. Why not just buy a glide ? Few people I know take their fairing on or off. RK is a great touring bike but for me, the glide is top of the line. Your results may vary

took me a second to figure that out but then it cracked me up. I might put little chrome nipples on them.

1. If your OL needs all the mentioned amenities to ride for more than 15 minutes she may be too much of a prima donna to be on a scoot anyway.

2. They make riding gear for those purposes.

3. Nice but by no means a necessity. I often turn my radio off and just enjoy the ride. (NOTE... # 4 should have been mentioned first as speakers are a moot point without it)

4. See # 3 above.

5. Nope. If she needs to pee, she can poke me in the side or lean up and holler in my ear. Could also fall under # 1.

6. Who the hell uses those things anymore but truckers?

7. They make detachable storage. IE.... T-bags. Locks just keep honest people honest, they do not stop a thief. (a "real" biker would say that you wear the same clothes for the entire trip but I am in no way endorsing this)

8. Windshield can added and removed at your leisure. Bugs are high in protien, you're missing out on some good nutrition.

9. Do you honestly monitor them all the time? Trip meter is more accurate and reliable than the fuel gauge anyway. If you have a charging or oil pressure problem you're more than likely screwed with or without gauges. Don't get me started on the useless thing they fill the other hole with.

10. Not needed but those can be added to anything that has a 12 volt system.

11. Can be had on any bagger. (standard on RKC)

And of course...

Yes you can and that's your opinion.

uhhh... what was the question? You can tour on any bike whether or not they are called a touring class motorcycle. To me, the Road King is the "perfect" motorcycle. It looks like a motorcycle should look; it rides like a motorcycle should ride; it offers you options for what you might want to do that others don't offer (you can dress it up or dress it down). This is not to say that other "classes" of Harley's are anything less - they are anything but less. they just aren't Road Kings.

I'll bite, DeneFXDWG. How would you classify it, if not as a tourer? Or are you saying it's a tourer, but not the 'king' of tourers?

Hey Alan, that's what is got me confused as to the thinking behind the MoCo and their line-up. I really don't think it should be in the touring classification, definitely not a softail but maybe start a new catergory and call it a heavy cruiser with bags and a smallish bolt on shield. That means my Wide Glide, (sold), is a touring bike, because I can put bags on it, a batwing, probably a fugly looking Givi tour pack, Ohlins etc. and have a tourer. Bottom line is that what basically everybody else said to my original post I agree, it is one sweet bike, whatever the corporation wants to class it eh?
