I just read the pamphlet the dealer gave me about the ESP...... It says the extended warranty takes effect the day after the factory warranty expires. So if you buy 4 years at the time you buy your bike it gives you 6 years (2 factory PLUS 4 ESP.)

Ill offer up my opinion on the matter.

you have until the end of your hd warranty to purchase an extended warranty - or so im told - when it comes to electronics most things that catasrophically fail, fail within the manufacturers warranty, by that time, you will know that you no longer want the item.

like a previous person stated, its should not be called extended warranty, it should be called extended catastrophic failure INSURANCE.. its a gamble...

now my story.

The only item I have ever purchased an extended warranty on was my 96 Dakota, about 5000 miles prior to the warranty going away, I had my truck diagnosed with a stretched timing chain, (was getting a rapping noise from engine)

the warranty company tried to bail on the coverage due to the chain not failing. I feel the only reason they covered it after all, is because I was a mechanic at the time, and could honestly say that the strectched chain was already a failure due to the vehicle being off timing, and not passing emissions. I then told them that I guarantee that with the chain being stretched, that the engine will eventually blow, and since the chain had already been diagnosed as stretched, and documented as such, then they will be covering replacement of the engine, even if I am out of "extended warranty"

long story short supervisor at warranty company decided it would be in their better intrest to spend the 600 now and replace the chain then the 2700 later and replace the engine.

Better to have and not need it than to need it and not have it..FWIW.
Cheap insurance when you think about it.

you'd better double check with your dealer on that. the way that the pamphlet is worded is pretty vague. yes it does say that expense reimbursement begins on date of purchase, and that mechanical breakdown coverage begins upon expiration of factory warranty. but, it doesn't really mention the time frame for coverage. they could be referring to your $50.00 deductible kicking in.

look at it this way, if you buy the 5 year plan, and it kicks in like you say after the factory warranty in 2 years, then they are covering you for 7 years of expense reimbursement. do you see hd giving you 2 years of coverage free? i don't.

hey, i could be wrong, all i know is what the dealer has explained to me about the esp after buying 6 harleys from 3 different dealers. and they have all said the same thing. 4 year esp means a 2 year extension.

"The Mechanical Breakdown Coverage begins the day after your factory
warranty expires"

Not vague at all.
