Default * Progressive Monotube install questions

How many spacers are you guys using when installing your Progressive Monotubes? I’m getting ready to install them on my 2003 Ultra and want to ensure that set it up correctly. The instructions note to install two spacers per side, however, I understand that altering the number of spacers affect the ride:

3 spacers per side = firmer ride
1 spacer per side = softer ride

My bike is a 2003 Ultra. Your thoughts concerning the number of spacers I should install please.

Also, per the instructions, Progressive recommends using red lock-tight on the lower slider bolts. What if you need to pull the front end apart … maybe blue Lock-tight would be better? Just curious what you all did.

Thanks

I would use some lock tight...period. keep in mind, use red lock tight on any fastener that could come loose and either harm you or worse!!

Is that what you did when you put your monotubes in?

That bolt is captive, so you cant loose it.

And its under compression 99.9% of the time.

And there is a redundant one in the other leg, so they would both have to come loose before anything went wrong.

And if it comes loose the top out is still controlled by the sliders anyhow, its not like the leg will explode.

One additional question:

Did you install the “Bottoming Cup” provided by Progressive with the kit? I suspect not, as your bikes appear to be newer than mine. FYI – The “Bottoming Cup” is for years 2002 thru 2005, however, I will be installing new chrome sliders from HD listed for touring years 2000 and up. Considering that I will have the same monotubes as you and new HD sliders (same as yours) fitting years before and after the 2002 thru 2005, I question if the bottoming cup remains necessary for my install ... I don’t think so. Just want to ensure that I get this right the first time.

Thanks for your feedback.

the bottoming cup is already on the bottom of your damping rods , you remove it and put it at the bottom of the monotubes , some year bikes have the damping rod set up in one fork and not the other side so they will only have one bottoming cup when the forks are disassembled so they give you one in the kit so you will have 2
