Default Best GPS

Have new SG coming this winter and wanted a new GPS for it. Seems the zumo 550 is the favorite on this forum and the rest of the Internet. Thinking about getting it now as others have said it is getting harder to find, i believe it is now a discontinued model.

2 questions
1. is there a model/brand that "you" think would be a better choice before i order the 550. The 550 seems to get better reviews then the 660.
2. Does anyone know of a newer model or brand coming out in the spring. I checked the Garmin site and they doesn't seem to be having anything

Thanks in advance

I like the Garmin 660 better. It's got a little bigger display and no buttons to mess with. Mines worked great in all weather.

I don't know about the Zumo 660, and 665 (too much money) but I am owning a Zumo 550 for almost 6 years, and it has been working fantastic for all the years.
Zumo 550 is not discontinued, as you can buy it any time from Garmin. Of course, the price is lower, if you spend some time to shop.
I've just purchased the lifetime map package ($90) from Garmin, and that will give me 4 times a year to update the map, as long as I own the unit.
For sure, my Zumo has been working through many rainy days without any problem.
Good luck on GPS shopping.

Zumo 660 here... picked it for the cleaner look and bigger screen. I have had no issues with it.

I too am in the market. I have an older 2720 but the touch screen is acting up. Looks like Garmin no longer services this unit anymore. Bought the lifetime maps last year so I'll lose that too. One of the things I love is being able to plot my course on my laptop and then transfer the info to the GPS...will I still be able to do that with the 550/660?

The Garmin 550 and 660/665 ARE the best in my opinion.

I don't mean to high jack this thread but I have a Garmin Zumo 550 AND the XM antenna, complete with m/c and auto mounts and all the stuff that came with it, in the origional box, for sale. $400.00 for all. (The XM antenna alone goes for $150 -$175.
I purchased the 665. Got a great deal on it that's why I bought it.
If interested, PLEASE respond to my email address at : tsw555@verizon.net
since I can't get on the forum every day.
Thanks.

Talking my research

I have also been researching and reading alot since summer, right now I am using a Nextar model out of my wifes car, it does fine whenever we travel, would eventuaslly like a better model.

On researching I also found the Zumo 550 the best for the price, unless you do alot of traveling I think the 660/665 is too much $$ buts that my opinion. I also read that the Nuvi 255 is second best and then the Street Pilot 2820 has good reviews too.

Try looking on Ebay and good prices, there are alot of good used 550's for sale for half new price. Good luck

Can you load the entire United States map on the Zumo 660?

I replaced my 550 with a 665, the 665 is a far, far superior unit. It's faster, it's got more memory, it's got lane guidance, and the interface is much easier to use. And then there's the bigger screen. I picked mine up from Surdyke for right around $625.
