I use the cig. lighter socket all the time for my NUVI 550 and my Magellan. Only issue I've heard about is the factory sometimes reverses the polarity on receptacle when it's installed and of course the only thing that works then, is the lighter.

Of course I've been powering my GPS from the cjg lighter receptacle, been doing it for 30k miles. The only time that receptacle blew a fuse was when I the cig lighter was in there!

Although you can use the lighter outlet, a much better way for power is to directly wire to the lighter wires in the fairing. Removing a streetglide fairing is pretty easy, just make sure you pile some thick towels on the front fender before you remove the fairing front cover so it does not drop and dent the fender. The connection is much better.

I am using a USB adapter also.
Here is a link to one, which is also available at Wal Mart.
Amazon Amazon

Notice in the second picture below, there is no interference with the tank when turning full lock right to full lock left.

I took the fairing off and spliced into the lighter wire. Soldered and heat shrinked. No issues.

I power mine with the cigarette lighter using the Griffin PowerJolt. Low profile so it doesn't come in contact with the tank, and has two plugs for another device if necessary.

That's a good idea, but my Garmin cord has the traffic update module on it. So, I'm stuck using the regular cig lighter power cord and being careful when I turn the bars left...

I have run my old Nuvi and now my Tomtom on the lighter sockets on two bikes.
Most GPS units won't draw anywhere near a maximum amperage for the circuit.
I just have to turn the GPS plug "just right" to miss the fuel tank at full lock left.
I just buy a new Ram Holder for each new GPS that I'm currently using.
Quick and easy.

Very interesting. I usually use the factory adaptor since I do not have to worry about hitting the tank in a turn. But I do like the ability to plug in two items if needed. Thanks for the heads up folks.
