After reading some of these threads and doing some online researching, to be on the safe side, I just went out and installed the pre-filter on my AN Big Sucker. It's black, so it blends in well...Now I'm ready for sand and rain....
You are correct, they are not available, and don't know the reasoning behind it. And although I don't know the year of your bike, they should be the same for SE's up until '08. I am also an Amsoil Dealer here in Central Fl.
Going from an amsoil filter to a k&n is going backwards. The k&n is junk. I had oil samples taken in my mustang with a k&n has silica so high that blackstone told me it's a problem. Ditched it for paper and tada,no more silica. sand in the oil is bad. Never will I use a foam filter again.
If sand is getting through the oil film, maybe it was not oiled enough??? They sell a **** lot of K & N filters and this is the first time I'm hearing about this issue...Anyone else have issues with K & N air filters..I'm all for finding a better alternative if it proves true..
From my experience with a K&N filter in a Blazer, I wouldn't put one on my Harley. I had the one in my Blazer for quite a while and it passed what I would consider a fair bit of dirt, a good friend of mine who is a mechanic pointed out how dirty the intake was past the filter when he was working on my vehicle. I guess the only way to have the best flowing filter is to have the least restrictive one which will also allow more particles to pass through. And yes it was properly serviced and re-oiled with a K&N Recharger filter cleaning kit.
