The 590's like compression up around 10.8. I'm actually a little on the light side at 10.6, but am not complaining about the results. It runs smooth, starts easy with releases and runs pretty quiet.

You might also consider a Head Quarters 575. I've ran that cam and it is pretty similar to the 590 in my build. The Cycle Rama 575 is another one that I have seen some pretty impressive dyno charts for.

I'm running a stock power pak 103 motor with cams , breather , tuner and pipes , I believe stock on the 103's is 9:6

 

I ran the 5G on my '04. It was 95" with 10:1 comp. It's a real good low end cam, but it has pretty short legs. It also closes the intake at 37 degrees so it is going to push your ccp over 200, you'll need comp releases for sure. The HQ 575 is a late model cam, the HQ-0033G is the early model counterpart. At a 40 degree intake close you are still looking at a high ccp, but that is what will get you the low end you're looking for. I've considered this cam. The TR-590 works so well in my bike I think I would just be doing a lot of work for little benefit. Biggzed has run both and there was very little difference in the tq or hp or where they came in.

 

I must be missing something, Bigboyz calculator shows 193ccp@10.17 comp. on the 5G. I have releases but I'm thinking I'd like to keep the ccp under190 max.

I'm starting to like the looks of the 54g at 10.1. It would put me in the 188 neighborhood and with the 42 close vs. the 50 I currently have it might just give me the extra low end bump I'm looking for, not a lot but maybe enough. Maybe add some 1.675 rockers for a little extra lift?

Have you thought about advancing that 54 by 4 degrees? I'd opt for that over the rockers. I think you'd get more out of it.

Yes, but then I'd be back up in the 190 (9.33) neighborhood again. I guess going that route would allow me the option of pulling the gear if it didn't work out. Maybe do both

When I set BB calculator up for your original post numbers, I get a ccp of 201 when I switch to a 5G. My ccp is 195 and I rarely use releases, but it is an '09. The newer starters are stronger. I wouldn't be afraid of up to 200 with releases. Why don't you advance the cam thats in your bike 4 degrees. Wouldn't cost much, might be what you want.

 

You're right on the 5G if the 10.5 comp is used. I could lower it by shaving my domes.

I do want to keep the ccp down around 190 so going +4 on my current cams is out. I do want to thanks you guys for the ideas (keep them coming). It's giving me a lot to think about.

You're right. I've just got it in my head I can do better on the bottom with different cams. Besides I feel the need to get my hands dirty. It's been 2 riding seasons since I've been into the motor. I like to try different things.
