Throttle body might need a cleaning and light lube.

I am going to try all these ideas that you all have helped me with. It is nice to know that there are real bros out there that care enough to try to help. IAC. Idle air control. Ultra has a good description on it. It has a solenoid controlled v pintol valve that let air in and back to a hole behind throttle valve flap. You can see in jump in and out on key on/motor. Not keen in all that spray. May drive all way up into solenoid and kill it later. Just spray lightly with it open (key on-motor off) while you hold throttle wide open. You will see spray come out air hole behind plate. Its just an air hole. No difference than idle up with throttle except ECM is controlling it.

oh yeah.. forgot about twisting the throttle. LOL.. never gonna see that hole if you don't twist the throttle. :-)

It's a 2001 with the old MM fuel injection. I've got nothing on that system, but I'd start with the basics....Fresh gas, fuel filter, plugs. Clean the throttle body and make sure the air cleaner element is in good shape.

+1 on changing the fuel filter and fresh fuel...and also add some good fuel cleaner to the fuel. 1/2 can of Seafoam fuel cleaner per tank full. That will really help clean out the fuel system. Amsoil makes a quality fuel cleaner also.

Fuel filter is inside the fuel tank.....

Did that to my RK and it actually made it harder to hear the fuel pump when turning the ignition on.

Bought a nice Honda VTX for my son......was stored for about 4 years...real low miles...ran like crud...Seafoam and 2 tanks cleaned it right up...ran good after that.

+1 on the IAC also..

Another thing to possibly check are the intake gaskets. Stored 4 years and no moisture whatsoever on those puppies could have dried them out.

Definitely IAC -Idle air control..

Its a solenoid bypass of the throttle plate. The throttle plate closes and the IAC is like a mini throttle plate that the computer can vary to control the amount of air going into the motor at low rpms precisely. it is probably gummed up with crud.

I have changed everything and still the same problem. I guess I will have to take it to the steelers for a scan??? I am going to try the fuel pressure regulator first??? This is the only thing left to do

did you clean the IAC through the pintol? if so, it may have simply failed but if it did, you should be able to pull a code from the bike's speedo


1. Remove right side saddlebag and side cover if so equipped. Remove protective plug from data link connector.

2. To activate the diagnostic feature, proceed as follows:
a. Create diagnostic test wire or use a female spade clip.
b. Install diagnostic test wire across Terminals 1 and 2 on the data link connector.
c. Turn Ignition/Light Key Switch to IGNITION and wait approximately 10 seconds (4 seconds lamp ON, 6 seconds lamp OFF) for check engine lamp to start flashing.

3. All trouble codes are sent out as a series of flashes. To retrieve the first digit of the trouble code simply observe the number of times the lamp flashes.
a. The lamp will then flash one or more times to indicate the first digit of the trouble code.

b. The length of time the lamp is illuminated and the length of time in which it is off are each about 0.5 second in duration.

4. The second digit follows:
a. Following the transmission of the first digit, there is a 1.2 second pause in which the lamp is off.
b. The lamp will then flash one or more times to indicate the second digit of the trouble code. Count the number of times the lamp flashes to retrieve the second digit.

5. If more than one trouble code is sent:
a. Following transmission of the second digit of the first code, there is a 3 second pause in which the lamp is off.
b. Once all codes have been sent, the data string is repeated. When you have recorded the same trouble code twice, it is an indication that the transmission has been restarted and that all trouble codes have been retrieved.

IMPORTANT NOTE ..If diagnostic test wire is installed across Pins 1 and 2 on connector in lieu of a Scanalyzer, the ECM is placed in a diagnostic test mode and the engine will start. The test wire must be removed from the data connector and the ignition switch turned OFF or the check engine lamp will continue to flash codes. A historic trouble code resides in the memory of the ECM until the code is cleared by use of the Scanalyzer or a total of 50 trips has elapsed. A “trip” consists of a start and run cycle, the run cycle lasting at least 30 seconds. After the 50 trip retention period, the trouble code is automatically erased from memory (that is, assuming no subsequent faults of the same type are detected in that period). The numbers after the 'historic' or 'current' is the speedo code number, but without the electrical diognostics manual you're peeing into the wind.
