upgrade to touring model

A lot depends on personal build and taste. Several of my friends ride Road Kings, and encouraged me to make the move from my "04 Wide Glide to a '06 Road King. It never really fit me right, and in '07 (96ci/6speed) I went in to test ride a Street Glide. I felt like a Shriner on a Honda 70 - I'm too tall for the Street Glide. Based on what I'd read on these forums, I asked the dealer about a Road Glide. He had two in back that weren't fully prepped, but that I could sit on. It fit me like a tailored suit. I asked about the color I wanted and he replied he'd have it in about 10 days.
The '07 Road Glide was a great bike. I did, however, fight the buffeting. Tried a taller HD windshield, which helped, then a Clearview recurve that helped a lot more. Rode it 34k, until they released the 2011 Road Glide Ultra - we were riding in Canada at the time. Got home at 3PM, took the RGU out on a test ride at 4PM, got back home with the new RGU at 7PM.
The RGU is unique in the touring line, and I am absolutely delighted with it. The lowers cut down the buffeting, and I added the $30 Road Glide Air Deflectors from HD - they really smoothed out the airflow. I'm still running the stock windshield, as I'm happy with it.
I ride solo 95% of the time - the wife has a 2010 Street Glide. I'm told that passengers prefer the air posket of the Electra Glide Ultras over the RGU, so that may be a consideration for you. Seems most 2-up riders end up with the batwing.
The Road Glide Custom shares many components with the Street Glide. Shorter shocks are included on both, which makes 2-up less comfortable. Both have useless stock windshields, and less comfortable seats. Both lack lowers, CBs, intercoms, and tourpacks.
Bottom line - for 2-up riding, get an Ultra. The EG Ultra Classic or Limited will probably be the best, but take the missus out on a RGU test ride just to be sure. If you are a lot bigger than she is, buffeting probably won't be an issue.

I ride a 2010 Road Glide. It has lowers, clearview windshield, and tour pak. In sturgis, we returned a rental car, therefore I rode as passenger on an Ultra Classic for about 20 miles. I think that the passenger gets more buffeting than the driver. I think that because the faring is farther away on the Road Glide, that the passenger would get even more wind.

Looking to upgrade to a touring model...I currently am riding a Super Glide Custom and after taking my wife for her first ride the other day (she loved it!) we decided we should look for a bigger bike for some longer trips. Any advice? First thought was going with a Road Glide Ultra. I've heard a few comments that the fact that the fairing doesn't turn with the handlebars might take some getting used to...
For the most part we want something comfortable, with good luggage-looking at trips of a few days at this point. Thanks for the input!

By far the best touring bike sold is the RG Ultra. (IMO) Great in the wind and truck wash on the hiway. My wife is nearly 70 and I'm 65. We do 500 mi days easily. Have gone as far as 800 mi. Many of these days are one after the other. Last yr we rode from central Fl to Bar Harbor Maine. This included a short stop over in Laconia for their bike week. Then a stop in York Pa to see where my bike was assembled. The trip was 12 days and 3 of those days we never turned a wheel. I'll never own any Touring bike other than a RG.
