I had the burn in the upper middle back. Came from reaching forward to bars. Put new bars on and fixed. You could try a seat that moves you closer. I suggest more pullback on bars.

I had the same exact issue. I went with Wild 1 WO577 12.5" bars and the pain and stiffness were gone...instantly!

For you, I would highly recommend the Wild 1 WO575 10" bars. You will love em!

Take the pressure off your back with Motorcycle Luggage from Biker's Friend. It offers back support and storage. Comes in five sizes.

+1

At your height with forwards on a Touring bike I would think you are riding pretty stretched out (clam shell) , this position will cause some problems.

I have back, neck and hip problems and the more up right I am with feet almost in a mid position is the most comforable for long rides for me. Sometimes almostr leaning back helps a little .

I switched to Hertiage Style bars on my RG and with them tilted back I can ride sitting straight up with my arms bent at the elbow, this works for me.

+1 The floorboards will allow you to lean forward once in a while. If you like to stretch out, put some highway pegs on your engine guards.

Floorboards also give you the ability to "shuffle" your feet around.

You can also tip your bars back to get them a little closer to you.

Backrest, backrest, backrest.

Contrary to what others have experienced, when I had my '07 Heritage, I had the same pain you describe when ever I rode more than an hour. After I bought the EGC the pain went away and has never returned. I assumed it was the Heritage's "mini-apes" causing the discomfort.

Maybe I misunderstood the OP but if this only happened this one time and you been riding ok up tp now, why blame the bike, is happened to me a few times, I either over streched my self at work or some kind of gesture that cause back muscles to tight up and it shows later. JMO

If you ride hunched forward with your body weight on your arms, you'll get the neck pain. Try to remind yourself to lean back, relax your arms, and let them hang from the wrists at the bars instead. I used to get the pain every day I rode until I figured this out. Now on week-long trips I'm fine. I think maybe that's why some find that higher bars help - they keep you from leaning on your arms.
