I have a garminfone, gps works independant of the cell, routes etc works fine.
it also logs GPS data into the photos, then you can scroll through your photos and hit "Go"

Perhaps a better question for you is to decide what options you want, because
I dont think there is really much difference between Garmin and Tom Tom.

I have a yearly update from Garmin, no problem.
I have had both TomTom and Garmin units on my bike. I went Garmin when the TomTom literally died mainly because it was compatable with the HD ride planner program and I could download my rides to it.

I concur they are very similar in capability and functionality. The routing algorithms sometimes makes for some variations in routing, no matter what options you've selected, such as no highways, no tolls, speed warnings, and etc.

It's just perception on my part, I have no real data to back this up, but I think the Garmin system leans more to the fastest route, while TomTom is sometimes shortest distance-centric.

I know a lot of guys have used auto units mounted on their bikes with no issues. I've gone with bike specific units as I have long-term concerns about moisture, vibration, and being able to use the controls with gloves. Both units give you voice commands via Bluetooth.
