Default Calgary Alberta to Las Vegas

Looking for some info an where to ride? In Mid February we are going to trailer 3 bikes to around the vegas area, unload and ride for about a week, its about 22 hours from Calgary Alberta. We want to avoid snow on the bikes we see enough of that in Canada. From Vegas where should we go. We are thinking of going South to maybe Yuma the east to Tuscon. We could head west to San Diego area. But we are hoping to avoid the busy west coast. Any advice would be appreicated, even if we can ride 6 hours a day we would be happy just to be on the bikes. I bought a 2006 street glide a month ago and have never rode it, it snowed the day I brought it home. Also is Phoenix about as far North as we should go in February. We also need to find a place to leave our truck and trailer for a week, hopefully at a mini storage site or someplace secure.

Thanks for any input.

Not sure if this should be posted under Touring but thought a lot of you guys might ride this area in the winter.

tmaxx: Around Las Vegas, we ride south and to lower elevations during what little winter we have. The higher elevations get COLD fast. Death Valley, Scotty's Castle and Furnace Creek are a must from LV. You might see 75 to 80 deg. days in the Death Valley about that time. South along the Colorado river system to Yuma is great. Don't miss a little Mexican border town just 8 miles to the west from Yuma called "Algodones" (Cotton in Spanish). Great spot for medicine, trinkets and drinking. They really go out of their way to accommodate the tourist. Park on the US side and walk into town across the border. It is secured parking.

Phoenix, Tucson and surrounding areas would be good. Tucson has a great warbirds airplane museum just to the east of town. Wickenburg, AZ is a fun cowboy/cowgirl spot once or twice. Quartzite, AZ is a winter phenomenon that should be seen once. About 30K to 40K motor homes, travel trailers and fifth-wheel trailers loaded with snowbirds from far northern frozen places congregate there every winter. The world's largest swap meet is set up there every winter. If you like airplanes go over to Mohave, CA and to the airport where Burt Rutan has his operation. Edwards AFB is close and has a neat museum. If you run into exceptionally warm winter weather, run up to Utah's Zion Park just outside of Hurricane, UT. Gets a little high in elevation, so watch the weather.

You should make it a point to pickup the Old Route 66 outside of Bullhead, AZ and take it up to Oatman, AZ and then on to Kingman, AZ. If the weather is warm enough take Route 66 on to Seligman, AZ. From that point east it gets high fast and cold even faster.

Parking your haul vehicle and trailer will be no problem. There are several new "store-it" places opening up right now along the south end of Boulder Highway in Henderson, NV. They will have outside spaces in secured areas available at reasonable rates. ........ BC

If you headed out in February there are alot of places you can ride with 65 and up temps.

If you need a place to park a truck and trailer we can work somehting out. You can fit it on the side of my house somewhere providing it is not a dually

Met some riders from Medicine Hat just two weeks ago. That's what they did, trailered the bikes to Salt Lake City. Vegas would be even better when you're coming. Big Cholla gave you the good rundown, but don't miss Southern Utah if it fits your times.[8D]
