To dyno or not to dyno
Hey guys I need your advice, I have a 2011 flhx with a 96in all stock except for the rc mufflers I installed, my question is I have a set of Vance an hines desser duals and a se air intake to put on. Problem is one Harley dealer says to just flash the ECM and the othe wants me to buy the 400.00 Harley race tuner because they have a dyno I presume.... So which is it just a flash or dyno???

Well it sounds like the dyno is the route to go, my dealer is telling me 400.00 to install pipes, intake and tune, and 400.00 for the race tuner... So 800.00 bucks! Now I have to find a way to sneak this past the wife well I guess I could install all the stuff myself and save 4 bills, anyway thanks for the help guys!

here are the questions you have to answer: what do you want out of your bike? and what future mods are you looking to do?
Flash - a normal Air Cleaner and slip ons is not pushing the performance envelope so there are plenty of "canned" flashes out there for this set up, which is to say that the dealer will just pick a combo they know will keep your bike in a safe zone for lean/rich air fuel mixture - this FLASH of the ecm takes your stock ECM and puts a richer fuel mix in to it and keeps you safe
Dyno - IF (and this is a big one) if your dealer knows what they are doing, then once your mods are on, they take the time to MAKE a specific program for your bike with those mods based on your set up. Meaning every engine goes together slightly differently and yours may be a little richer or leaner and adding a more free flowing exhaust and more air via a air cleaner with more volume flow can adversely affect it (highly unlikely it would because the stock ecm has some variance in it if you are too lean), but this is custom
IMO - if the mods you have listed are all you are going to do, just buy the XiEDs from knightrider and call it a day for $125 delivered
if you think there are more mods in your future and have the $$$ get a programmer and pick one of the "canned" maps from their list and use it for now, when you are done modding (i.e. you may decide for true duals, you may get cams, etc) then spend the money to get your bike dyno tuned by the experts in this field.
I would NEVER let the dealer dyno tune my bike, spend slightly more and take it to someone that specializes in this (which MOST of the dealers do not do) most dealers fix bikes, most install parts
it really depends on what you want out of the bike, if you can afford it, go all out, and your bike will repay you with miles of smiles, if you want to keep it a little cheaper for now, do your two mods and just buy the XiEDs to keep it a little richer than stock and enjoy your new sound, and slightly better acceleration

I'll add another twist. Get a Rev performance ECM like I did and install it all yourself. It's self tuning and a cinch to put in. I did exactly what you have and my bike runs perfectly. This weekend I'm dropping a set of cams in and a 2 into 1 header and all I'll need to do is send the ECM back. Will it wring out every last possible HP? Nope, but it will run well with no worries about a poor tune from an incompetent wrench. I got mine for less than $650 delivered (send a PM and I'll let you know where if your interested)
This will allow you flexibility if you ever want to do other mods. I bought mine knowing I Was doing the cams. I wanted plug and play and no BS which is exactly what I got.
