Interesting but I have work on two Harleys since I posted 8 above that I believe the problem was coming from changing the filter and letting the oil run down on the cable. Gets in the outer protective cover (not the cable but the slide on sleeve) and runs down for a long time.

My money is on the cable's O-ring not sealing properly and allowing tranny fluid to leak out, every so slowly.

On mine, the cable housing threaded end is well sealed in the tranny end cover. I experimented today with raising the cable above the end. So far, after a short ride, no drips. Time will tell.
