Default Possible cam chain tensioner noise, source located

All, I had this noise in the right side of the engine, '00 EG Classic with 85000 miles. As I read postings here I suspected the cam chain tensioner(s). Well, I tock the advice of one of the members and dropped the exhaust and pulled the nose cone. As I was removing the nose cone parts started to fall out. Parts from the front or outside tensioner. I was planning on doing a cam upgrade just not like this. I just wanted to say thanks to all for the assistance

Good luck. Remeber to check the oil pump very good for possible damage and flush the system out really well, as well as the cam plate through the cleaning port. Do the cams yourself and save some cash....and remember to put some of that $85 you saved by dropping the exhaust and checking yourself toward beer to relax and oogle over the job well done

Don't forget to drop the oil tank and clean all the material out of it. If you do not complete this step all that debris will get tranfered into your shiny new parts. Repalcing the roller tappet assemblies would also be highly recommended. Harley-Davidson offers a kit that includes new cams, pressed in a new support plate with bearings, oil pump, roller tappets and all gaskets needed to complete the job. Part number is 24984-99 for efi and 24985-99 for carbureted. The retail is $534.00.

Yikes. Sorry to hear that. Sounds like worse case scenario came true. I don't know that I would be comfortable just replacing the cam chest components and moving on. Sounds like there were parts flying around inside the engine. Remember there is no way to ensure those pieces were contained to the cam chest. I would consider pulling the cylinders and checking the rods to make sure they are in spec. When I did my 95" kit my front rod was too tight. Ended up being a small piece of tensioner material was lodged in the flywheel assembly. Had to replace the whole assembly.
