different volumes on ultra sound system ?
I notice much louder sound on same volume setting on my 2011 ultra when I play a cd vs. playing mp3/ipod thru aux. plug (much lower sound). Is this normal? Very noticeable especially thru headset. I would think the internal boost would be the same whether receiving radio, cd, aux, etc.

They are all different sounds levels.
The CD is the loudest
the radio is next
the HD X-M unit is **** poor as far as volume goes
I never had an iPod with my old bike so I don't know about it.
I do know some people have trouble because the volume setting on their iPod is not set at full volume.

if using an ipod and itunes, you can select tracks ( multiple tracks if you want) select "get info" which is command I on a mac.
select options, and you will see volume adjustment--- you can take the tracks and boost the playback level there.
same procedure for podcasts.
( maybe same for PC)
if you wanna get fiddly, you can "EQ" tracks as well, same procedure

FYI
My original Garmin Nuvi 765 from 2007 had a low level volume line out signal, but when I sent it to Garmin for a $100 Repair / Upgrade in 2010 the replacement that came back played way louder ! I used to use a Booster-Roo from Radio Shack to increase the line out volume, now no longer needed. the Booster-Roo cost about $25 and runs on 1 AA Battery that lasts a long time (10 - 20 hours). Now my Garmin mp3 players plays loudest of all things in my HK Head Unit - without the Booster-Roo
