07 FLHX Starting Issue/Service Bulletin on Starter Fasteners
I have had issues with starting my 07 FLHX every now and then. It seems like the bike will start up fine even if I have not rode for weeks. Then after a short 5 minute ride or a 120 mile ride the bike will sputter or miss on start up. I have replaced the plugs and the bike runs strong when it's running. I'm thinking it may be the Harley Service Bulletin M-1231 "Big Twin Starter Fasteners" which says
"Starter fasteners may loose clamp load. This can cause the starter to loosen and lead to poor ground contact, which can result in poor starting as well as possible damage to starter."
My 2007 FLHX has a Stage II 103 and I'm running Rhinehart True Duals (which sit inches above the starter) my questions is; How hard is it to remove the starter? I would like to check and see if this is the issue. My other guess would be if some teeth are damaged on the fly wheel/starter? It seems like I would need to tear the rear cylinder pipe off and slide out the starter? The battery is original but holds a good charge and the lights don't really dim when I hit the starter. Thoughts please.

while you are at it, take your battery out, take it to autozone and have it load tested ( charge it overnight on a real ( not trickle) charger if you have one.
It may also just be your battery...( if you need replacement look for "Deka" brand).
If that checks out fine, then do as the above post instructs and while you are at it, just loosen, brighten ( scotchbrite pad, sandpaper, piece of rubber eraser etc) any electrical connections.
Electricity can have trouble moving through a hot connection- there is more resistance- which creates more heat/more resistance...it's a cycle. ( and that could be why cold starts have been easier.
