200 miles from home and she blew!

Yep I bought it with 2800 miles on it and have since put 2400 on it. Supposedly the previous owner had many bikes and this one was never riden. I tend to agree about the gaskets and seals...
It only had a 30 day warranty but I was so pissed I felt I bought a lemon for a bike...it had already been in for injector replacement and then the fork lock got stuck. I hope it's somewhat minor problems and I will let you all know how the dealer handles it. Even though it is out of warranty, I think with the problems I have had within the first oil change, they should do the right thing and help me out.

OK Guys, let me know what you think...
Talked to the HD shop yesterday. The question they have asked me twice now is "Have you added any extra oil to the bike since you have had it?"....Both times I told them "No"...it was about 200 miles from its next oil change...Harley did the previous one before I bought it.
They said the air cleaner was saturated with oil. I am assuming there is a crankcase blow-by in there like the other bikes I have owned. That is the only place that the believe the oil is coming from. They said it was started, good oil pressure, and no noise. They are going to test ride it and see what happens.
When I took off on my trip, all fluid levels were perfect. When I dropped it off at the Harley Shop, it was a quart low...It really looked like there was at least half of that on the side of the bike. Is it really possible for that much to come out of the blow-by at one time? and what would cause that?

This happened when I first started riding I had a Softail with a 88 motor and I put too much oil in it once and it did the same thing. I started it up it backfired and spit oil all over the bottom of the air cleaner then it slowly dripped out got all over the bike. There was so much smoke I thought the engine was gone. Took the aircleaner off and it was soaked with oil. I had been riding it for a week with the extra oil in there.

according to them, no it didn't "blow up"....I haven't heard the final diagnosis yet. I guess its good news, but still does not explain all the oil everywhere. Is this a common problem? My initial instinct when it happened was to just take it directly to the HD shop and not try to self-diagnosis the problem on the side of the road. All I could see was a plethora of oil on the bike and myself....

It's just your first comments were "she blew". To me that means a blown motor, not that it matters.
I would have been pissed too, until I found out it wasn't a blown motor.
I've had a motor blow on me, twice. Once in 1975 and again this summer.

I agree with what you did. I would have been seriously concerned too.

But, again, hopefully its not a major issue and I can get back to riding before it gets cold again!

That would be my guess also. If you don't ride em and they sit, seals dry out. Especially if they used dino oil for any length of time and then sits. Dino oil decomposes like dead flesh and the damage it causes is anyones guess. Id be interested to know which seal blew and if they gotta go in after it have them replace every major seal or it could happen again.
