RE: I went shopping for my first Harley and.....
Im on my second Harley have never got the extended warranty for all the reasons stated above.
I ride about 15,000 miles per year and so I do buy the service plan. I come out way ahead even if i just keep the bike two years (the service plan is for three).

I also have the dealer finance it because they are much more willing to bargain as they make $ on the financing as well. That way I get the service deal for $1300 rather thab $1500. I then pay the loan off within a couple of weeks with a home equity loan-----less interest than Eaglemark and also deductable interesst.

RE: I went shopping for my first Harley and.....
In my case, I went for the extended warranty and I did it for peace of mind.
I not only use my bike on a daily basis for commuting. But my wife and I enjoy it for many hours and miles on weekend jaunts. We also relax by taking it on numerous vacations throughout the year. The last thing I want is to have the misfortune of a break down on a vacation. Not to mention, being at the mercy of an out of state dealer. With the extended warranty, the dealer has to convince Harley (not to me) of their diagnostic prowness and repair recommendations. All I would have to shell out is a $50 deductible. I don't have to worry about credit limits, wiring money, motel or vehicle rentals.
The only warranty work that I have had done to date, was a stripped shifter spline. This occured 400 miles from home and was readily fixed. It did not require any overnite accomodations or car/bike rental. But if it did, the insurance would have covered them as well.
The peace of mind doesn't only come into play when we're on the road, but is also present even while on home ground. If my bike breaks ....I've already paid to get it fixed!!! It will not sit in my garage for weeks or months gathering dust until I GET AROUND to bringing it to the dealer. It will be there lickity split cause I know whatever the problem it will cost me $50 to have it fixed.
Plus, I would like to think that with the extended warranty being in place, my bike would sell faster and for more money if I were to put it up for sale. Thta's one of the things that push me to buy a brand new bike. Now, I can sell a used bike with MORE of a waranty than a new bike has. Not that I'm going to selll my bike anyway.
However, I would not have bought the insurance if my bike was garage jewelry. I use it and the warranty is just another tool in my tool kit. If I don't have to use it so be it. I hope I don't have to use my tire plugging gear, I guess I bought that for peace of mind too.
As for the argument that the dealer makes a bundle of money on the extended waranty....WHAT IN GOD'S CREATION doesn't a Harley dealer make an exorbitant profit on? Of course, this is a calculated risk stacked in the dealers favor, and so is Las Vegas. I've lost money in the casinos as well as the Harley dealers. In my view it's money well spent. How much peace of mind do you get from $1,900.00 worth of chrome???
Well, That's the way I see it anyway!

when i got my 04 Road King they had a special going on ext warrenty. It had a standard 2 yr and if i took the extra 2 yrs they cut my intrest rate by 1% so by taking the contract it only raised my monthly payment by 2 dollars, it was a no brainer, i took the warrenty.

Sure the dealer wants you to get it, cause they make large. Personally, I never get extended warranty/service on anything...and have never regretted it!

I've only needed the extended warranty on a laptop and didn't purchase it. They gave me a 100,000 mile warranty on my Diesel F250 and I'm already at 70,000 miles and haven't needed it yet. I guess it's piece of mind but I don't think I would buy it, at least not until I used the bike a while. If it has a lot of warranty issues during the first 2 years then you should buy it before the factory warranty runs out. Just buy the bike and enjoy it.

I would not buy a product I felt an insurance policy was needed on, and that is what a service contract is. These contracts are priced to have high 30%+ margins. I know I used to sell them.
You may win, but contracts are priced for the provider to win.

I don't have a service plan on my Glide.

Statistics show that extended warranties are a waste of money unless you are one of the few unlucky customers who get a bad apple and have to use it. Fortunately, the factory warranty is long enough that any problems should work their way to the surface within that duration. If the dealer lost money on the warranties they wouldn't be offered. That's my .02 and I'm sticking to it.
