I will not ride without earplugs. Its the wind noise more than the pipes causing most folks problems. Try a set of the dense foam plugs. You can still hear what you need to hear, but no ringing after you get home. Protects your hearing for sure.
Unless riding just a few miles I always wear earplugs. My SE touring mufflers sounded great when idling or just riding around under partial throttle. But riding all day (up and down hills) on and off the throttle I found them too loud.
I have 4" Reinharts on my SG, no problems listening to my tunes nor do they bother me, with the stock pipes I felt like I was riding an IBM ball typewriter.
Jackpots sound awesome but I need to wear earplugs with them if it's anything longer than a short spin. OTOH, my CVO mufflers don't sound as "cool" but are still louder than stock and the noise level is perfect for long distance touring without earplugs. The SE103 pistons/255 cams probably make my bike louder than it would be with stock pistons and cams.
[QUOTE=Pumba11;8735243] Sounds like babies farting though their diapers! But I can hear my tunes much better. Yet at the same time, I normally don't run with the fairing.

+++1 Absolutely the right answer. It's the rushing air past your ears that will cause you to feel fatigued after a long ride. I won't go on an intertstate without them.
Other than the rare short trip, I've always got my custom earplugs in. The exhaust isn't bad at all, but the freaking wind will wreck your hearing quickly.
For comfortable foam ear plugs go to Wally World and get some skin colored ones called Hearos...,think pack of 10 is like 1.97. VERY comfortable and do a great job
