Default Shift Lever shaft is sloppy

So the bike developed a really annoying, slight metallic sounding rattle. It took me quite a while to find it, but I've finally found it.

There is a fair bit of play between the shift lever shaft and the engine case it goes thru.

I checked the FSM and the parts book to see if there is a bushing of some kind between the shaft ( p/n 33709-82 ) and the main casting, but the parts book only shows a "Spacer" ( 5817 ).

Is the "Spacer" what's supposed to take up the play between the shaft and the casting? If it is, how easy is it to replace? There's no informatioon about it in the FSM ( section 7.3 ). The parts book shows the spacer on P34 ( item#7 ).

Dawg...you out there?

Anyone else run into this?

Same issue on my 07, for now i used a washer to tske up play between the stock washer and shifter arm. Im gonns deal with it this winter. As of now i have no seal leak or any shifting irregularities, so im just gonna wait. But the washer i stuffed in between the two took 85% of the play out and almost all the annoying noise

Oh and btw i cut a slot out of the washer so i could just slide it in. So i didnt have to pull the primary apart. I tapped it in gently with a dowel and hammer. It was an aluminum washer so soft metal so it wouldnt **** the shaft up

My '02 has an aprox 1" thick rubber bushing between case and shift leavers. take off shift leavers (one allen bolt each) and slide off, on new bushing.

I was going over my RKC after purchase and notice some slack. Then got to looking at and noticed no bushing, no grease fitting. So I took it apart. It was covered with corrosion (I know, unbelievable on a Harley), cleaned it up and greased it with a heavy syn grease and put it back together. Put the grease shifter shaft on my once a year list of things to do.

There are two bushings which are shown in the primary housing section, 42642-00 is the number for the bushings. Slop might be from rear lever in which case you might develop a shifter shaft leak if not taken care of. Good time to replace all the seals

On my 2006 Ultra I replaced the original shaft with the Pingel one and I believe that took care of the present and future problems.I hope!

Had the same rattle on my 09 Street Glide as you. First thing I tried was to tighten the bolt that holds the shift lever to the spline and that took care of the rattle. (so far)

Dawg is correct there are two "spacers" . It takes a little effort to get them out, but that is whats allowing the shaft to move around and make noise. The parts guy told me that Pingel makes replacements that have a grease fittings. $100 is what he quoted me...

I drilled and tapped my primary to add the zerk fitting like they used to have in some of the EVO's.
