Thumbs up Removed Lowers on my Ultra

I removed the lowers on my 2010 Ultra earlier this week and went for a 180 mile ride yesterday. The improved airflow greatly reduced the amount of heat on the right side and overall I am very happy. I should have done this three months ago before we hit the 100 degree heat! I think I will buy the quick detach hardware to make the task even more easy before I putnthem back on in a couple of months.

I'm still going to get a CATless header in the future, but wow this sure has helped. I did get a few bugs on my pants leg, but a washing machine gets rid of them. I also think that for long trips I would like to have the lowers on, but we will have to see about that.

For those of us in warmer areas of the country I highly suggest this mod. Had to buy the storage bag to keep them in to avoid scratches.

Mine didn't come with them (used bike) and I have no plans to get any. I can see their benefits in cold weather riding and for the storage they provide, but I always felt cramped behind them. That's probably psychological since they really aren't in the way of anything but still, I like the feel of the wind without them. I wear chaps in cold weather and that works fine.

Why did you wait so long? Here in pittsburgh everyone I know with lowers take them off for the summer also. I have the canvas ones for cold weather.

Get rid of your CAT and you'll REALLY be happy!

Hey Drew,

have a look at your oil temps- you may find them higher.

The fairing lowers order the air across the motor resulting in better cooling of the motor, with out them, much of the air hitting the motor is turbulent coming from the front end & fender.

My oil temps are 25º cooler with the lowers on this time of year.

I did some on/off temp testing some years ago in our pleasant summer weather

Mike

More air - more resistance - mote fatigue.

Thanks Mike I will do so. Perhaps an oil cooler is also in my not to distant future.

I never have liked the look of the Lowers. I've never had an Ultra, but even if I did I'd get rid of those, just looks bulky on there and I like the air-flow of the open road without them. I ride down into the 30's sometimes and I've never felt a need for them. I wear leather lined Cortech m/c jeans. The leather knee panel and CE armor in the knee area do a good job of keeping me warm even at freeway speeds.

Now this is interesting! Never gave it any thought. In fact I'd have guessed the opposite, but then again it makes sense as the air is pushed/directed from the lower inward to the front cyl head especially at speed.

I don't have time to read this post - I'm still looking at drew4jan's avatar and celebrating God's creativity. Oops... I think I just sinned!
