I leave mine on but the vents are open pretty much all the time, and my buddies don't take them off either. By the way, I'm also from Pittsburgh.

I tested the oil temp theory with lowers on and off. 85 degree day, exact same trip. No difference in oil temp.

I have 03 Ultra, I have taken mine off for the summer. No difference in engine temp, but big difference in my temp.

My lowers are the older style with the little vent door. Not nearly enough air getting through for me.

Had to buy the storage bag to keep them in to avoid scratches.

No storage bag here. Bought a pair of King Sized pillow cases ($6.00). Cleaned them up, slipped them inside, wire tied the tops together, and gently placed them over a rafter in the garage. Lots cheaper than MOCO's Storage Bags.

Mine never come off. If I want my legs to be cool, my boots go up on the highway pegs. It just makes sense that with the lowers on, the air is directed towards the engine a little better. Plus I think they look great on the bike.

Sure are more bugs to clean off the lower half of the bike without then on. Also, when my feet are on the highway pegs my jeans don't blow up my legs. Middle of October I will probably put the lowers back on as the temps will be back in the 80's.
